So, I have been towing trailers for years. Only had 1 misshap when a pin sheared off. Here is a question for you all. I have never used this style of trailer latch. I know there is supposed to be a hole for a pin on the side will look at drivers side when i get home. Other then that pin missing is this correct? I feel like those "ears" should be down in that slot. IS there an adjustment? Has this been repaired with the wrong part? I ask the folks here because i know you know older trailers... please enlighten me. 20230115_125703 by matt wilson, on Flickr

Also, planning on putting permanent tow chains on the unit. THe PO has added allot of metal to the hitch area. Any suggestions on adding the new chains? Bolt through the A on both sides, or add them like seen on the pictures. I will have the correct weight rating etc, this was simply a temp solution to get it home 20230115_125610 by matt wilson, on Flickr

Hi Matt, Check out this thread for a discussion on safety chains. vintagetrailertalk.freeforums.net/thread/7655/attach-safety-chainsAs far as your coupler, the latch should have the teeth under the latch seat into those two slots when its on the ball. Can you slot the teeth when the coupler is not on the ball? Is the ball the matching size for the receiver in the coupler? Others are encouraged to advise on this. Rod

Yes there are 2 teeth on the thing. however they do not set "back" into the slots as they should. I am asking is there an adjustment to be made? I am using a 2 5/16 ball. the 2" ball seemed WAY too small and the ears still did not go back......... i mean it could have been changed at one point. its a 1972 Holiday Rambler. I just have not had this type of hitch lock before

The way that coupler is supposed to work is that you pull up on the latch and back towards the rear of the trailer at the same time. It often needs a little jiggling. The "collar" that wraps around the front of the coupler should hinge upward and then move back a little as the marks show at the ends of the collar. This all happens when you want to drop it on the ball or release it from the ball.
It's possible that the latch was replaced by a shorter one, but unlikely.
I would think the larger 2 5/16 ball would be the correct tow ball size for the size of the trailer.
Did you try to get the teeth in the slots without the coupler sitting on the ball?

My Holiday Rambler used a 2" ball but the hitch was different. Put the ball in the cupler and latch, it should not come out of the cupler. If it does, move up one size to 2 5/16.
