It's funny how your standards change as you get older.
A '57 two door wagon never "seemed large" to me, until I put it into my garage, it barely fits!

When our house sells we will be buying a tow vehicle for our trailer. My only criteria is it needs to be a station wagon and early 1960's or late 50's. My husbands criteria is that it has to be travel worthy. So far we have only found one that meets the criteria, but right now we are "just looking" I would hate to find the dream car and not have the money. This one is in British Columbia. We may open our search to the USA once things get serious. This is a 1964 Impala

First it is "wise money" to buy a finished car, compared to the cost of building a junker. The Impala wagon would be a good choice. IMO, If your going to do any kind of a vintage tow vehicle, it needs to be upgraded to todays standards, seat belts, A/C, modern engine/transmission, new modern or rebuilt suspension, Disk Brakes, Improved lighting, etc.
However in buying a car, you stand the chance of "our problem". We now have a "new" finished car, and a "new" finished trailer. The car is painted the Blue/White colors of a handicap insignia, and the trailer is finished in Chrome Polished aluminum and "Baby Ka Ka" Green. It's a major clash! I guess we will now need to build a new trailer to match the car, LOL.

John the color issue is a big deal... At lest to us ladies. The trailer and tow vehicle have to match.. Or it just wouldn't be the same..lol To make things worse ... I am convinced that my trailer should be painted claim chevy colors.. Matador red and India ivory. ... Did I mention my husband is a very patient man

After looking around for awhile, I was not able to find a bolt-on receiver for my 1957 Ford wagon. I have decided on one of the Drawtite RV hitch kits, available from ETrailer.
I'm always blown away with this online company, they offer free freight on orders "over $100", they seem to always have what I order "in stock", and they bombard you with emails informing you with every step of your order in progress. They offer a huge product selection. They may not stock much in the way of vintage trailer parts but they are a great source for mainline towing items.

Here's a couple of pics of my wife's new to her 64 Fairlane Ranch Wagon. We've been looking on and off for several years to find one. She had a 64 Fairlane coupe when I met her, so a wagon of the same was a goal of ours. It came from an estate, been parked for a long time. Needs a tranny, brake upgrade, and some general lovin.

Nice wagon the little V8 was a good find. 4 wheel discs and an AOD plus power steering if not already on it and a vintage air HVAC would allow her to tour in world class style. Then if you are going to tow the trailer with it and need more umph you could also add turboed, injected 302 to it real easy. I don't know if I ever saw one with the optional bumper guards they are kind is cool on a family cruiser.

It does have power steering and I'll do a front disc swap for starters. An injected 302? I don't think so, lol. My wife says this ones staying close to original, and I agree. It's getting so hard to find an original anything anymore. AC? Darn that might be the one big concession, we'll see. Keen eye on spotting those bumper guards! I never thought too much about them. But I have a couple of buddy's in our car club " Thee Inland Emperors" tell me after some research, that they were a factory option. I've never seen a set until these, and have had a couple of nice offers to sell them. I think they will stay where they are

I agree about the original, but you could swap in the ADO trans and keep the C4 and cross member in case you ever wanted to put it back to original. Better mileage, less engine wear. You can shift it with the original column shift you just wouldn't be able to lock it in low gear. Just a thought. Also if that is a 289 it must have been built in the spring or late winter of 64 because I think most of the 64s had 260s in them, but 48 years later I could be wrong. I just had a second thought, that engine will have the five bolt pattern instead of six so a trans swap would require an adapter, let it alone like you said.

bmxovich By the way what part of the country do you live in. Washington state, Spokane to be exact. That little 289 has the 6 bolt bell configuration, so it is adaptable. I've been told it came later in 64 somewhere starting in August. I'll dig up the casting numbers this week and see what falls into place.
