Question about how to Shellac
I was finally able to find some good quality birch 1/8 plywood from a plywood supplier here in Buffalo MN.
So my question is how to go about the Amber shellac process.
I heard of thinning the first coat 2 parts shellac 1 part denatured alcohol.
Second coat 50/50
Does this sound correct and how long do you wait before sanding between coat.

Check out Mobiltec on youtube. Larry has videos on everything. I know he has some shellacing videos on there.

I do my coats straight out of a new can. Shellac dries VERY quickly, so does not do well on hot days. Also, one coat and leave it; feather in the edges. I am thinking thinning with alcohol might help the hot weather issue but also require more coats. I've used 4 coats on most panels. Also, do not try to overlap or apply another coat too soon.
Sanding should be done between dry coats. Usually, the first coat doesn't need much sanding. (it is thin and only adding color)

Make sure you do all of your shellacking with the panels flat on sawhorses. I installed a wall section unfinished because I thought I might damage the finish as I installed it. This is a BIG MISTAKE... MUCH more difficult to apply Shellac on a vertical surface in a cramped trailer. If you do scratch the panel while installing it's easy to fix. Live and learn!

I do 25 to 50 denatured alcohol depending on weather, heat, humidity and how big an area I am trying to paint. The other nice thing is if you scratch it just use some denatured alcohol to clean it up.
But mobiltec has all kinds of stuff.

What kills me is that I bought shellac for the last Shasta at $14 a quart. Now it’s $22 a quart.

Well it seems that the only place I could find this Amber Shellac was at Lowes.
Amazing that Home de poop dose not even know what it was.
I was able to get two coats on and it looks really good..
Question is do I need to put a clear coat on or can I go straight to a past wax.

Put on a final coat or 2 of clear. Gives the amber more depth. You might not need the wax.

You absolutely can wait between coats. Since shellac is alcohol based it will, or can, cut into previous coats unless thoroughly dry, which if uncut will take longer than cut with alcohol, or as I prefer, Behkol. It is made specifically for dissolving shellac flakes or cutting shellac strength. You can get it at woodcraft or Stewmac or some bigbox stores.

I’m a little confused here.
I just put down three coats of Amber shellac and it been drying for three days now, I have to say I love the color.
But I’m really confused on the next step.
Is it safe and a good idea to use the same Zinsser brand clear and add two more coats or should I leave it alone.
Thanks VTT
