Greetings everyone! Newbie here, although I've been lurking for a few days. I've never owned a hard sided camper before, but I had a heavy-duty popup for a few years, so I'm cautiously familiar with some aspects of campers.
I've always wanted to get an older trailer and fix it up for personal use. A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to pick up a 1979 Majestic M1850 for what I considered a pretty good deal ($500). It's in rough shape, it's going to take a TON of work, and I just want to go on record as saying I'm not looking to slap some goop on this thing, throw a little paint on it, and head on down the road. I've done some poking and prodding inside and there is a good amount of wood rot (water intrusion from vents in the ceiling as well as at the corners), so I'm going to have to take it right down to the ground and work my way back up. I have no misconceptions about this being a massive undertaking - but I'm looking forward to it all the same.
I started doing some light demo inside the camper - taking it nice and slow - in an effort to identify the major problem areas. As I've lurked around here, done tons of reading, watched many hours of videos (thanks mobiltec!), which led me to stop for a few minutes, join up here, and reconsider my approach. I'm now leaning towards skinning the camper first and working from there. Slow and steady wins the race.
I also recognize that my camper doesn't necessarily meet the qualifications of "Vintage" in this context, but I'm looking forward to learning from the multitude of experienced folks here all the same. This camper was manufactured the year I was born, so it's still vintage to me...
I won't go into any specific questions here, as this is just a place for introductions - with one exception. I've spent a significant amount of time trying to find any information about the history of this unit / manufacturer. My holy grail would be some documentation of this particular model and how it was outfitted directly from the manufacturer. Here's what I have so far:
Manufacturer Name: Majestic RV Corporation
Address: 51477 Bittersweet Road, Granger, IN
History: Incorporated in December 1976 and dissolved in July 1989
I have the names and addresses of the President and the Secretary, but don't want to violate anyone's privacy by posting them here. If anyone here is familiar with this manufacturer I'd sure love to talk to you.
Thanks for sitting through my long-winded introduction, and many thanks to the members here who have already benefitted me so much through the sharing of their knowledge. I'm looking forward to learning more!
Paul
