Started back to work on my 59 Deville, see intro in the newbie section. Question on sealing the metal door framing in the trailer door opening. Hinge side looks like it had J rail, indentations in the H channel but the right side is smooth and does not have the impressions of the siding. Do you seal behind the H channel as in between the channel and the trailer, and does J rail go on both sides and above. TIA

Hi Rimrock,
Is there any way you can post pix? It would make things easier to "see".
If it helps, here is a tutorial on posting pix to the board. vintagetrailertalk.freeforums.net/thread/7276/add-photos-hosted-flickr-tutoria
Cheers,
Rod

At the very least, I would putty the dips. If you use pure Butyl, you can pull it thin at the humps and leave it thick in the dips. I've use 1/2 x 1/16 in these areas. You can always double the thickness where needed.

Agree with the need for sealant/butyl behind both pieces bit can't account for the indentations on the left hand piece unless it were screwed from the outside as well as the door frame itself. J rail would account for this but no matching J rail on the right. Pulled it apart to long ago to remember and my early pics don't show the detail I need.

I think one of my trailers did have J rail at the door toward the front. It appeared to be an add on and not from the factory. I filled the holes and left it off.
