Just wondering where the term "gimp" came from. If I do a Google search, the only things that come up are from VTT. So, does that mean that someone just coined the term? Larry perhaps?

Gimp is actually "braiding" in upholstery terms. It is used as a trim in multiple applications.
Welting is a "fabric covered trim"; also called piping or cording. Vintage trailers have vinyl welting between the wall tops/cabinets and ceiling panels. It covers gaps and helps prevent squeaks.
Both terms are used depending on where you live. For instance, where I live, we have vintage trailers but on the East Coast, they are camper trailers. California uses the terms "vintage camper trailers" at the DMV.
No right or wrong-gimp or welting both work.

Here in New England "gimp" is multi-colored, flat plastic cord-like stuff that girl scouts, and day campers weave into things like key chains, lanyards, etc. Before I became involved with VTT I'd never heard the term used any other way.

Before I started working on vintage campers I thought the word Gimp was a derogatory reference to somebody who is crippled. I wondered what the association was between the two.

Yep, that is what "gimp" means to both me (a New Jersey boy) and my wife (a Wisconsin girl), who grew up making stuff with that gimp. I think someone mistakenly used that term for "welt" or "cording" or "piping." Nevertheless, this is how words enter the lexicon. Still, who first started using that term for this all-important element of our stick and tin campers?

Before I started working on vintage campers I thought the word Gimp was a derogatory reference to somebody who is crippled. I wondered what the association was between the two. Yep, my wife adopted a cat that has a deformity in her left front leg, and only 4 toes on that foot (no dew claw). She does use it sometimes, but tri-pods it around the house a lot. We were told that she was born that way, so she doesn't know anything else. I call her "Gimpy". She jumps up on the couch beside me, squeaks, and shakes that leg at me. She has flat wore out the left side of the scratch pad. She doesn't let it slow her down, that's for sure.

I think there might be a connection between the outdated terms "handicapped, crippled, or retarded" and "gimp". Day care and occupational therapy facilities used to provide gimp to patients to make lanyards and other things. Thus, a person whom had any disability was called, "Gimpy".

Sorry, but every time I hear the word Gimp, I'm reminded of Pulp Fiction.

Makes me think of the guy named Forrest in his younger days, before his box of chocolates or shrimp boat...

We have a skydiving boogie each year called Grumpy Gimpy Ol' Farts... It's a bunch of old skydivers who can barely still keep walking. Some have to crawl onto the airplane LOL...

From my non background in upholstery I always associated "gimp" with all things resembling a wet noodle. It seemed an odd term when I first saw it used for trailer seams. My seamstress/tailor wife had no issue with the term and went on to relate it to the uses in her trade. Welting is used in the shoe making/cobbler and leather/harness trades. It has a similar look and function (edging) and feel (gimpy).
