It's been noted several places here that the best butyl tape is the kind that has a crinkly BROWN paper backing. That is the kind I used successfully in the past. But when I looked at Vintage Trailer Supply they were out of stock, as it was at other camper supply places. So I looked at Amazon and found pictured what seemed like the exact stuff I wanted. The brand was Colorimetrics and it arrived a few days later. However, beware of bait and switch. This stuff was backed by WHITE paper and was very difficult to remove from the backing. Fortunately the free returns allowed me to send it back. Then I ordered this stuff from GSSI (again from Amazon). It is backed by brown paper, not as wrinkly, but it does peel off easily. Apparently it's used in the HVAC industry. Good stuff. 20210811_091945 by Joe Mirenna, on Flickr

RV "butyl" tape comes with crinkly white paper. The crinkly brown paper is often years old.
I believe what you bought is pure butyl tape with smoother paper. It works but is messier to use and can ooze out in hot sun. Many good sealant tapes are sold by roofing companies.

Thanks for the info. I am also looking for the original butyl tape. I have a 1966 Beeline that has the corner caps and am looking for the best way to reseal them. It does need a new roof, so I may put the new one one with a fold over and J rail. The sides I will keep the corner cap on.. Any suggestions on sealing corner caps?

pennyg, As vikx said above, original butyl tape is hard to work with especially in the heat. Very hard to trim in comparison to putty tape with the crinkle paper backing. I've bought good tape from this place...
Buy the 1" not the 3/4" wide tape.
I'm not sure about sealing the end-caps without seeing a picture of them.

Hmmm...looks like I need to return the pure butyl tape and buy this. Good thing I used Amazon, easy return. Pure butyl tape lasts for years as we've seen while taking vintage campers apart but trimming it above 60 degrees is a mess. Like trying to trim chewing gum. The tape above trims well and so far has lasted me 7 years while still staying soft. Will it last 50 years? Heck, I won't last 50 years.
