Apologies if this is already addressed in a previous post...if it was, I was unable to find it. The front/bottom skin piece appears to have been through the ringer. In addition to a number of dents and dings, the bottom edge (which was originally mounted in a questionable way) has split in a number of places. Long term, I know this ought to be replaced, but in the meantime, what is the best course of action to repair the edge so it can be securely reattached? Other forums have suggested riveting a patch and sealing (was it polyurethane?), or else trying JB weld. My original thought was to slap on some Nashua waterproof tape to the back side and maybe some OSI to the front once its remounted. What are your thoughts?

This piece of metal looks like the lower front?? It would be best to replace this rather than try to patch it.
If you must keep it, I would put some waterproof tape on the back to stop the split. (all splits and flaws) For the big split, you could apply a patch on the front as well. Cut the patch to fit, putty with pure butyl and attach with screws.
Here is an example of half moons around the tongue on a Cardinal:

Square patches will work just not look as well. If I was patching this metal, I would have matching pieces on either side.
Again, you are better off replacing this piece of metal. Depending on the size, it may be fairly reasonable to do that.

We plan on replacing it in time, but that will be at some point in the future. Just so I'm clear about what you mean by "putty with pure butyl," would I be lining the patch with butyl tape then attaching it to the skin, or is that something different?

Make you a rock guard out of some aluminum from Home Depot. They sell 3x3 sheets. Just piece you a couple together and do the quilted pattern with a pizza cutter

For tongue guards, I use pure butyl tape, 1/2" wide by 1/16" thick. Pure butyl has slick paper compared to the crinkly paper of RV putty. The butyl goes on the edges; the screws hold the patch tight.
