There's a 1959 Shasta available near me for sale on Facebook. The seller doesn't have title or registration and I live in California. For what it's worth, there is a California license plate and what I think is VIN info Ser#D5S 16894 PA 1453. Having recently read some of the nightmare scenarios shared on this page, I'm afraid. www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/120953480112034Can anyone help with the VIN # or part of it? I can't figure where 1959 comes from. My initial thought is to check it out this weekend and give a low ball offer. If I lose, I lose. However, my offer if accepted, may offset future expenses incurred. Then of course will be the complete tear down and rebuild. Fun. Thoughts? Help? Thanks

It is a 1963 Shasta Airflyte Deluxe and I believe it was built in Leola, PA. Although as a D5S it may have come from Northridge CA
The title is always an issue but can be done.
Best of luck with the offer.

The title can be a real tough deal in California. Do heavy research. Hopefully our Cali members will chime in. I would not spend any money until you have a title.

If you haven’t been inside a Deluxe, you might want to take a day trip even if it’s just to look at it. It’s a LOT of trailer, almost twice the size of the Compact. The bathroom is a nice addition, especially f you either boondock or use campgrounds without facilities. If you’re interested, You do have the vin, maybe the DMV can do a title search. If you go, take pictures and let us know what you found!

mobiltec is the authority and he recommends never buying an untitled trailer in CA. I love that camper but wouldn't touch it for free. Just doing our PTI registration was the most painful government interaction in my life.

There's a difference between no title and lost title. Some sellers are the legal owners and are too lazy or don't know how to replace a lost title, so they may advertise as "no title". If the seller is the legal owner, or is granted a POA, then it should be almost painless. The opposite is true if they aren't the legal owners. Clarify this with the seller before going any further.

Hey all, The trailer sold before I could check it out. Thank you so much for all the input.

Those Shastas go fast. Like to have a title though.

Hi Friends,
Late post I know to a thread over a year old, but I have something important to add.
I know someone who got a Shasta, coincidentally, with a Bill of Sale in California. He goes to register it and the trailer has over $800 in back fees attached to the license plate. This scenario can play out as well when dinking around with no registration in California.
Cheers,
Rod

Yes, my first experience with no ownership cert(pink slip) in California. DMV charged me with 7 years back fees and late registration fines. My airstream cost me over $1000 to register. That’s the first and last time I buy on a “bill of sale”. I have bought and sold 3 trailers since, all with current registration.

It's tough learning everything the hard way. That's why this forum is here and why I make videos. Sometimes CA can be reasonable with things like registration and sometimes they can be a real pain. But even if you DO buy without a title you need to get one before you invest any more money. A quick call to Triple A or a visit to the DMV to find out if it's stolen or not can save you a lot of time, grief and money. So don't be impatient. Do your due diligence. You'll be glad you did later.

Can you register a home built trailer in California? I've heard VT is the easiest state to register any camper without a title. My brother has done a couple of cars from out of state by using a "service" in the state.

My brother has done a couple of cars from out of state by using a "service" in the state. Hi Friends, Do a web search on "vin verifiers". Or look up "auto registration services" in your area and see what comes up. I would recommend a service that has someone come out to verify length and width of the trailer if you are in search of the coveted PTI registration. Especially if the trailer is homebuilt. To the original question of whether or not California does homebuilt registrations, you probably (not sure) can. The DMV might be able to assign a new VIN to the trailer most likely with a sticker that would be applied to the frame. I thought I remembered from some older posts on VTT that folks with no VIN on their trailers ended up receiving a sticker with a new VIN for those trailers where the original VIN could not be found. But, maybe that's not in California. Cheers, Rod

I also heard that you could weld a new tongue on with a new vin and call it a home built.
