I am upgrading the electric service in my '64 Shasta 20, but have a problem with the hole size on the skin. The hole cut in the skin was a 4" long rectangle. We want to install a 30 amp plug, but the widest plug we could find is still not wide enough to cover the hole. It is not in the budget to replace the skin right now. Is there a larger cover for a 30 amp Inlet that I am not aware of? Should I patch the hole, and if so, how? From the inside and bondo the outside? From the outside?

Hello,
I ran into the same thing. I ended putting an outlet there instead. (I often plug in things into it) Then made a new hole for power inlet.

Absolutely. Make it an exterior outlet and install the new 30 amp inlet in a different location. Be sure to add sturdy wood backers to each. If you need photos, please PM me for my email address.

Thank you, both. I don't know why I didn't think of that, but it is a great idea!

Another question...For an exterior electrical box, do you slide in/mount the box over the skin or under the skin but over the frame? In a house, it would be on the outermost layer, but I don't know if that will create leaks on a trailer. I also worry that if you mount it under the skin, the ridges from the edge of the mounting brackets on the box could leave impressions in the skin.

The inlet mounts on the skin after proper backers. Putty tape will seal it very well. Show us some photos of what you have and let us know your plans...

I have added some framing - just dry fitted in right now. I will bore a hole in the large piece of wood, and in the metal outside, to support the 30 amp inlet. The new 30 amp plug will be next to the outlet. I am going to get a single 15 amp receptacle so that I can use the Bell outlet cover that was on the trailer. I will seal both outlets from the outside with putty tape. Am I missing anything? IMG_2728 by Emily Andrews, on Flickr IMG_2727 by Emily Andrews, on Flickr

Looks good Emily. You might consider using a deeper box for the outlet; a little easier to wire...
