Well this is what happens when you only restore the inside of a trailer and don't bother to look under the skins to see where the rot is. This trailer came apart right at the skirt boards. Had this trailer been restored properly this never would have happened. I wish to thank my student Elan Firpo for sending me this photo.

That's some gnarly rot around the floor edges.

Could you see if it is possible to track down some more photos? Call it curiosity... This is a late-60's early-70's Shasta 16SC. I have one, and I have been in the process of a tough repair on mine. In the process of the repair, I have replaced the skirt behind the wheel well. The one in front of it was replaced in the original repairs in 2015. It is ALWAYS a good idea to look underneath the aluminum. It hides a lot of sin.

Did they shove flashing under the sill to hide the rot?
Wow!

I don't believe so, it looks like what you are seeing is the bottom piece of the siding. It is attached to the underside of the sill boards, and slip-fit into the siding piece above, so it would detach like that very easily.
Here it is removed, when I did the forward frame repairs:
This is called, "lifting the skin"...

I get a lot of smug remarks from people who don't think it is necessary to look under the skins. They say I am using scare tactics to advance myself or my channel. LOL... This is why I don't follow other old trailers on the highways.

Larry, can I borrow your photo? I'd like to add it to another thread, just to keep it in people's minds...

Somebody I met in Florida had a vintage camper repaired from the inside without the skin coming off. I explained how I restore my campers and he politely told me it seemed like overkill. In told him I've put 25,000 miles on my camper since the restoration without a single problem and we should talk again when he gets to 25,000.

I see on craigslist quite a few adds wanting to buy old trailers to “fix up”. You wonder how many are really structurally sound when they are re-sold. It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure the trailer is safe before it hits the road. I am glad I looked into my 66 Kenskill. It was worse than I thought with rotten corners, floor sills, and loose frame bolts. Be safe out there.

A little spray foam and she’ll be good as new.
