Good Morning .........I sent this message below to a member named ROSS, that looks after this category, but haven't received any messages and he has not been seen on the forum for quite some time......is their anyone that can address this. I have been a member since 2017, but not on the forum much as I need to find my VIN # so I can get a proper registration of vehicle here in Canada.
Sep 27, 2020 at 10:16pm Quote Message Options I have sent several messages on Vintage Trailer Talk since Aug 2018, and still cannot locate the Vin # on the hitch and also looked behind the bathroom mirror on the outside of the door and no #. I have found three numbers in front of the ball on the hitch though and was wondering if you can use those numbers to date my Shasta Compact that is either a 1961 or 1962. I have photos on my computer but no where here does it allow me to browse my computer. It wants an url or a link and I do not have my images of Shasta on a webpage site. The three numbers starting at the top are: 2090113 and below that the second # is 2166208, and the last is 2178094. Thank you for any info you can find, as I can't start work on this until I have it in my name and I need a Vin # to go the the Motor Vehicle Branch here in Canada. Thanks, Gail Taylor New Brunswick, Canada

The VIN should be located in two places shown here. The one on the near side is stamped in the frame, the location inside the rail is a plate welded in place containing the same number. The stamped VIN is the one most commonly found, as the plate is usually (but not always) rusted too badly to determine the numbers.
Many times the VIN stamped in the frame is filled in, either with paint layers or old rust accumulation. Take a wire brush to the area until you start to see the stamp appear. Be careful when doing this not to obliterate the stamping. Your VIN will be a letter followed by a 4 or 5 digit number. The letter identifies the plant that it was built in, and the numbers are sequential build numbers from that particular factory.
Here is an example of what you are looking for:

Hi
Newbie here... I found the VIN# right where ya said it would be! Left side of hitch as you are facing the trailer.
Mine is V29035
We think it is a 1969 Shasta Compact... is there any way to confirm?

Mine is V29035 We think it is a 1969 Shasta Compact... is there any way to confirm? Database shows it built in Goshen Indiana plant, 1970 model year, in a run of Compacts built there.

@ten.....Thank you so much for your response to this. and for the photos. I want to start work this Spring, but need the VIN # so I can get it registered here in my name. I will go and have a look and take a wire brush this weekend. This is my third year and still have not found the VIN on the hitch. Looked behind the toilet closet mirror on the outside of the door and it has a date. I have tried to find the metal plate in the area you show in your diagram without any luck. It has lots of beaded hard rust. I have previously looked in the same spot you show on the left outside of the hitch, but I will try to scrape lightly with a brush. I used my palm sander but it shows nothing. I will try to post a photo but it wouldn't let me before. Thanks for your great diagrams. They are very helpful.

Hello and welcome, If there is any paint still on the tongue, you can add some paint remover to the mix. Apply in both areas in Ten's diagram. I think you will be more likely to find it on the left side of the tongue as referenced earlier in the thread. Scrape the paint carefully with a putty knife. Between the wire brush and paint remover, you should be able to see it. Here is the link for how to post photos to the forum. vintagetrailertalk.freeforums.net/thread/7276/add-photos-hosted-flickr-tutoriaRod

Good Morning,
Last weekend I got some metal cup wheels and attached to my drill with some paint thinner like you all said to do, and finally a few numbers appeared right next to where the crank is up front of the tongue, but those numbers do not make sense from what most people say that the first numbers would represent the year and so my number is V6830. This does not represent my year of Shasta Compact as I know it is a 61 or 62.
So is this my VIN #?
Thank you.
Gail Taylor

Most Shastas didn't include the "year" in the VIN. It might be the VIN and if it works for Canada, it works for me.

That appears to be your VIN, yes. Post in the Shasta Database II and NC will get back to you. My VIN was right behind the jack plate on the side of the tongue.
As we go, I'm going to use this thread to help folks find their numbers. I may delete a few posts and keep some. Any methods to bare the VINs is appreciated. In other words, paint thinner, stripper, etc. Good photos of VINs are appreciated as well, especially on that inside plate.
