Just purchased a 55 Shasta 1400 and the PO had never used the dining table as a bed.
Anyone know how this sets up? Wondering if I'm missing some support piece.

The sprung seats form the bed. There are usually two slats from dinette box to dinette box to support the middle. The table in a 55 didn't fit the space. Post a photo of what you have please.

Its funny V, my 1957 had the two slats in storage under the goucho. They are about 8 inches wide and about 1/2 inch thick. They fit on the wooden ledge of each seat box frame to act as a bridge for the seats.

AND: if the sprung seats are missing, a different plan will have to be devised...

Here's what I have: The table slides out to the left or right. No pieces/slats I can find. For some reason I can't see the image above, so use the link below as needed: Shasta Dinette

If I center the table, I have a ~2" gap on each side to the boxes where the seats lie. That should be fine if there are slats running across.
However, if the slats run across, the slats would be sitting ON the ledge, meaning the slats would be higher, so I don't see how that would work.

I do not use the table to make the bed. The slats act as a bridge from from one ledge to the other, then I flatten out the seat cushions and bring them together to make the bed. I store the table on the floor under the slats between the seat boxes. I don’t have a picture right now. Hope this helps.

Would love to see pictures and get real measurements of your slats. I still have a question of how they'd sit over the top. As I said, I don't see how they'd lay down without raising the whole thing... Maybe someone redid part of the bench: Bench Frame

There are boards on the front of each dinette about 3/4 of an inch below the top of the dinette. The slats fit on those boards, making everything level to lay the seats across. And you do have sprung seats.

here is a picture of what it should look like. You are missing the support board across the front of the bench. This is a far away picture but you should get the idea. You will need to add the board for the cross support to sit on. 20200916_193210 by Tom Ress, on Flickr

Thanks Shastatom. Your picture is a great reference -- I can make that ledge that the slats sit on. Are there multiple slats running across that I don't see in the picture?
idaho211 says he has 2 of those boards running across which are around 8" x 1/2". Yours looks more like 2" x 1/2". Do you have more of them? Waiting on idaho211 to measure his. Would be great if you had a hard measurement as well.
These sprung seats would have to be really strong. The gap is 28-5/8" across, so I'm skeptical that 1/2" thick boards would be sufficient.

Easy peasy. The boards are one bys and should be a full 3/4" thick. You can use as many as you like or use a piece of plywood.
