In the process of cutting out the birch walls and have been thinking about how to finish them. I really like the two toned look of white walls with the original cabinets, but I can't stand the thought of painting new natural birch walls. Yesterday while standing there trying to picture things it occurred to me that the birch panels are already SUPER light. It got me thinking.... what if I just finish the walls and ceiling in a clear (non yellowing) finish, and then refinish the cabinets with a couple coats of amber shellac to make them purdy again. Has anyone ever seen or done anything like this, and if so how did it look? Thoughts???

I am doing this for my sons camper now. I am staining the walls with a white wash stain that I needed to add a few drops of grey stain into so the grain will pop and then he wanted the cabinet doors to be a darker grey stain.
I think it will look ok but some people will not like it but it doesn't really matter what other like or don't like it is what he and his wife want and they are going to live with it. So I say do some samples and see how it looks and if it looks ok to you then go for it.
My 58 Airflyte had clear shellac on ash boards and it looked nice. But I am not sure about how amber and clear will look until I see some examples. Also remember that amber will get richer each coat you put on so that will also make some difference.
Have fun and make it the way you want if you plan to keep it. If you want to sell it then keeping it all one color tends to be the better option.
What ever you do, don't paint it. But again that is my feeling and on a vintage camper the wood grain to me is why I buy it.

I like two tone interiors. A natural on the birch walls would be nice. Do some testing before you decide on color/stains. I'm wondering if amber will be too orangey red for the cabinets? Do a larger panel with amber (like the size of a cabinet door), then lean it against the natural birch. You have a lot of options and it should be fun to experiment.
Take pictures for us!

I agree with vikx, test, test, test.
And as Tom says, make it your own.
But be sure of what you pick because it's hard to undo.

Thanks for all your input!! I'll post up pics for sure once I have all the samples put together. I tinkered around with stains, clear and amber shellacs a bit today. The four coats of amber looked OK with the clear, still a bit more orange than I'd like but and could live with it if I had to. Stains under, over, and mixed in didn't work at all. I decided to order some garnet shellac flakes and mix up my own shellac in a darker shade to see how that works. Hopefully the tones will accent each other and pop like I'm looking for, but the flakes wont be here till next week soooooo now I wait........
As an aside...really diggin that Scotty!!

I know you're cutting the walls so the birch you're experimenting with is the same that will be in the Scotty. But for others reading this thread I'll add that if possible test on the actual wood that will be in your camper. Or test on new wood, then once you settle on a color try a small section (out of site) in the camper. Wood reacts to stain/shellac/etc differently based on grain/age/old coatings/etc.

Hi Friends,
This is not the first time this conversation has come up. If you do a search on VTT for the words, "two tone", you will find some threads on this very subject. Once the search is completed and you see the thread titles, look at the one called "Two Tone" or "Birch walls and painted cabinets". Both are near the top of the list within the top 10. There may be other valuable threads relevant to your needs.
Good luck,
Rod

My scratch build is going to be two-tone, of sorts. My walls are prefinished birch plywood, quite light like new maple. Most of my cabinetry will be face framed with walnut because I have a ton of it on my lumber racks, all locally milled. The doors and drawer fronts will be the birch ply, but edged in aluminum and fitted with stainless steel slam latches, mostly seen in the boating community. I'm going for that high end boat finish inside while keeping with the traditional aluminum outside (although I am strongly considering NOT painting anything other than some striping decoration.

Hey everyone! Been kind of slow going with winter here. Apparently shellac doesn't really like being applied in cold weather so I ended up turning my dining room into a temporary shellacking station, but I finally have some pics of what the two toned interior looks like for those who are interested. 20210120_155005 by jmeti000, on Flickr 20210120_155019 by jmeti000, on Flickr
