Hello Friends,
Just a thought while reading a recent thread on window seals. It reminded me of the difficulty I had installing my D-Seal on my Hehr jalousie window. I just found a tip on the Vintagetrailersupply website. Dip the D seal in soapy water first before installing or coating it with powder which I assume is talcum powder and then insert.
I had a question, though. What happens if you put it in warm soapy water and then stretched it like a rubber band and then had a second person push the inserted part of the D- seal into the track as it was stretched? I just wondered if stretching it would narrow the part that goes into the groove and as it recoiled after inserting, it would fill up the gap.
I would try it, but I don't have another jalousie window to try this with. BTW, my experience was with a model 4 J 30 which is very similar in size and construction to the model 1626 that Larry restores in his Repairing a Jalousie Window video. The key difference is how the screen is mounted.

I wonder if the rubber band system will leave the seal stretched?
I spray WD40 on the channel to help slide in the seals in place.

I use spray silicone. It slicks the channel really well.

Be careful with the WD40 nccamper, it tends to deteriorate the rubber over time. Have changed things made of rubber that WD40 was used to assemble, (mount tires) makes a black, nasty mess. JMHO...

Hi Friends, Whitney beat me too it. I was going to mention this same thing. When I installed the D- Seal on my jalousie, I tried a water based lubricant because I didn't want to use a petroleum based product. According to Wikipedia, it's WD 40 is 35% petroleum. I was worried it would contribute to the decay of the D- Seal material. The water based lubricant I used didn't work, though. After about two inches, I could only move about an 1/8" at a time. It was a very tedious, arduous, and time consuming process to "inch" the D- seal forward. It almost reactivated some carpel tunnel issues. I did clean out the groove rather well before attempting. I wonder if the external temperature plays a role. Rod
