My BeeLine Wasp roof overlap / seam was done from the factory this way as well. They used aluminum skin front and rear and used galvanized tin on the center section of the roof.

I don't think today's tar is as good yesterday's tar. If it worked for 50 years...
That said, some sort of sticky boat goop may help seal the overlap. It looks like it was about 3"? I'd put the goop at the inside seam and place 1/8 butyl at the outside. It will ooze, so maybe set the putty back 1/8 inch or so.
You can also do a trial with different thicknesses of butyl to see which you like best. 1/16 may work better for flat seams. My Hanson had a small bend where the metal overlapped, so the butyl oozed into a slightly larger gap right at the joint.
