Hi, There is a hole in the bearing cap. Why? Has it been enlarged?

My guess is that someone had trouble getting it off and used a sledgehammer to drive a screwdriver in and twist it.

I agree the hole was probably caused by some not knowing how to remove the cap. It should be replaced or brazed shut.

...OR the last person to pack the bearing left the cotter pin a little long and it rubbed and eventually wore through.
