One of the many projects I finally got to was upgrading my dust collection. My whole life I’ve worked around wood dust, but like many, never worried about it. A few months ago I had some breathing issues and my doctor told me to clean up my act in the shop. I’ve had an old delta collector for years, but all they really do, especially with old leaking bags is collect chips and shoot the bad dust right back at you. So far, this is what I’ve done. Put the delta out on the covered porch of the shop( great noise improvement too) with hose piped through wall. Got new bags, top and bottom. And here is the great help...got a cyclone separating unit. Oneida Dust Deputy Got a small 5 gallon bucket collector to go between palm sander and shop vac. Got a Jet brand air filter to hang from ceiling. We still have to do gated duct runs, so now just using the long 4” hose. The difference is amazing. I highly recommend any with a wood shop large or small to not ignore the dust as long as I did. There are hundreds of videos out there to show you how. For supplies try woodcraft or rockler.

At first I thought you meant “collection” as in “I have a dust collection.” I figured it was probably something like the “water collection” my son used to have. Then I read the post. Boy, did I feel dumb!

I'm going to move this to the tool section. Great information!

That's been my weeklong project too. Main problem also bags on my similar old delta 1 1/2 horse. I'm doing a 2 hose with quick disconnects and dual blast gates. Biggest challenge is closing in contractor style table saw because of the open frame and outboard hanging motor and belt. Have spent hours looking at youtube for uncomplicated ideas... so far all are a pain. If my shop wasn't in the basement and really tight quarters I'd replace the 40 year old saw with a cabinet style. My self isolation is an excuse to keep at it, that and crappy unSpring like Ohio weather. I've spent so much at Woodcraft they don't even ask for the credit card # anymore, they just say "See you in awhile".

At first I thought you meant “collection” as in “I have a dust collection.” I figured it was probably something like the “water collection” my son used to have. Then I read the post. Boy, did I feel dumb! When I first met my wife I had no idea that she was "a collector". At some point, early on 35 years ago, she proudly showed me her dirt collection from when she was a little girl. I can't explain it, but that made an impression on me. Fast forward to 6 years ago when we moved into our current home and we had the opportunity to purge stuff. It didn't happen and now we have an attic full of things and only my wife knows what is up there. Someday our daughter will have such fun going through it all!
Roadtripper, thanks for the heads-up. I am hoping to replace the pathetic Sears metal and plastic 10'x13' shed that came with this property. It had holes in the roof so I built a 1"x3" frame and wrapped it with a double tarp over 6 years ago, hoping it would make it through the winter. It is still OK! I am looking forward to finally having a real workshop. Of course because we live next to a conservation area, I have to jump through hoops to get permission to build a new shed. If I do, it will most certainly have a system like your's.

Thanks for the interest. Kirkadie, I haven’t tackled my table saw yet. It’s an old unisaw I’ve had about 35 years. Had bearings redone a couple times but still good machine. I read one opinion that said it’s wrong to box the lower cabinet in too tight because it needs plenty of draw, but I don’t know. Sometimes I just stuff the 4” hose under there. Doesn’t help too much so I need to work on that too. There are some DIY over arm collectors on u tube that look interesting. Surf around and see what you find. I just got my jet air filtration box hung from the ceiling today...very nice.

.... I read one opinion that said it’s wrong to box the lower cabinet in too tight because it needs plenty of draw That is right. You are not trying to pull a vacuum on the cabinet, you are trying to pull a large volume of air through the cabinet. Air speed and volume of air is what is important. Just like wind, the stronger it is the more dust it picks up. If you have a vacuum but little air volume moving is not going to 'pick up' the dust in the cabinet. So for every cubic foot of air you pull down your hose, you have to have the same amount of air to enter to replace it.
