Hi,
Do you all use stainless or steel staples to apply the skin? The ones we took out were rusted tetanus spikes. Not sure I'll have it long enough to deal with rusted steel staples again but maybe?
Thanks, Nate

I use the yellow coated ones from Home Depot. Harbor Freight were cheap, not coated and apt to rust. I would think stainless will be spendy.

There's really no choice, Rod. Aluminum staples wouldn't drive. I seal with OSI gutter seal; all divots and staple heads.

I didn’t think to seal them. Does that make it harder to go back and remove them if necessary? There's really no choice, Rod. Aluminum staples wouldn't drive. I seal with OSI gutter seal; all divots and staple heads.

OSI gutter seal is pretty cool stuff. It is removable with paint thinner. Takes a little, but you could scrub them with a toothbrush. I don't think you will want to remove staples once the trailer is rebuilt.

We used Monel staples in the marine trades. Expensive, but they will last forever. I agree with vikx regarding the Gutter Seal. Just use it sparingly. It does hold up well.

I know I won't want to remove the staples once I have the siding on. There's a chance at least of re-siding it down the road. I know that doing it now makes the most sense, but it's just not in the cards. The old siding is in good condition besides a 2' x 2' section the PO cut to get the potty out. I've been looking for a patch of the same style but haven't found one yet...
Question: with 3/4" siding, do you use a 3/4" staple to get the skin on or would a 1/2" or 5/8" leg staple be better?

I use 3/4 staples. You also have to adjust the air pressure so the staples don't drive too deep.

I use stainless staples. Yes they cost more. I didn’t want to take chances. That said, most of the original nails I removed through the skin were not that rusted, but my trailer had what I consider, to be very little rot.
