Finally found a vintage Shasta (with wings!) that’s in my price range! She’s rough but thanks to this forum and after 2 years of trial & error on an ‘82 Shasta Friendship (finished & sold!) I think I’m ready for the challenge. Please take a look at the pics & tell me what everyone thinks. I’m concerned about the sagging at the curbing but am prepared for a total rebuild. Also wondering about the year/model and what the general guesstamation is for cost to rebuild. Thanks in advance! www.flickr.com/gp/149264163@N06/NVmCFV

I'd say late 60's and all the pieces (I can see) are there.
A few questions... Is the tongue bent? Is the frame solid?
Are you local so it doesn't have to travel far? Is the price low? Does it have a title? I assume not or you wouldn't be asking about the year.
If you're ready for a complete rebuild and this is the model camper you want (and the answers to the above question are good) it looks it may be a good candidate.

I’m going to look at it today, so unsure of anything beyond what the pics show. It’s about 90mins from me & listed for $500, already put down a deposit for owner to hold until I get there. Owner is a friend of a friend, so trustworthy & got a receipt in writing. No title but in my state you only need bill of sale & a VIN verification from the local police to confirm it’s not stolen. Still looking into transporting it to my workshop.

I am guessing here but you will need to do a frame off. I would also guess you will spend around 4 to 7 grand to do it right. The real question is if you are looking to keep it or sell it. I see these models often on ads. The front window may be an issue finding but since I see these normally being parted out I think you can find them. If your looking to sell it make sure you know what a nice one goes for.

Looks like it has all the windows, stove etc. I’d really check the frame. That rear bumper looks trashed. In my opinion the windows and Shasta emblem are worth $500 but I’d offer $300.

Hi Friends, I have always liked the lines of these trailers, but I agree with Aslmx. I wouldn't offer more than $300. That lack of a front window bothers me. You will have to find a window assembly for that and that could be difficult. Someone mitered a wooden frame around the front windows. How was that mounted? What kind of holes were put into the skin to mount the wood framing? God forbid, they used liquid nails. The amount of goop on that trailer is amazing. Look at the tops of the rear marker lights and while I have my observation spectacles on, look at the goop around the rear window. Geeze Louise. That goop has to come off. What's hiding behind the bed that you can't see? The rear skin down low is peeling up and ripped probably from parking tag. The biggest worry for me is that gap above the door. It's got some frame sag or the right front wall is loose from wood rot. Get underneath and use an ice pick to poke at the wood and push on the outside of the trailer to see if it moves... Finally, be careful getting it off the blocks. I am going to assume you can still get tires underneath the wheel wells, but unless there was settling over the years, you will have to be careful getting a jack underneath, or excavate the dirt underneath to make clearance. No tongue jack to help assist in stability. Make sure the coupler is in working order. I would put this on a flatbed to get it home. Nuts! Third edit: I would pass on this trailer because the front window is missing and spend more to get something that is in a little bit better condition and has all the windows. Just my two cents. I support any decision you make, though. Please keep us informed and ask any questions you might have especially about moving it. Rod

Ok, I went & looked at her & I'm really on the fence with this one. Please take a look at the added pics and help me decide. It has new tires (not currently attached) & the current owners towed it fine 3 years ago but has been sitting since then. www.flickr.com/gp/149264163@N06/NVmCFV

After seeing the rust in the pictures, I am a little concerned. Keep in mind, I am a So Cal guy and all the (4)trailers I have retrieved all had rust underneath, but not like this. This seems more serious, but someone with more experience with trailers in 3 season environments can really confirm or deny my concern. I see evergreen trees in the background which leads me to believe there were snowy winters leading to gathered snow or a lot of moisture collecting underneath and created a high moisture environment. Also, even if it towed "fine" three years ago, doesn't stop the freeze thaw cycles from doing their damage in three years. Did they tow it down the road a few miles or many miles down the highway? What does "tow" mean for the seller? I don't doubt your skills to do a frame off, and some folks like the challenge, but I still stand my my position. I still feel that you should keep looking. The loss of the front window assembly and the rust issue tells me to hold off and, as previously stated, put your money into a better starter trailer. The door is falling off. That confirms the rot in that corner.I look forward to reading other opinions. Rod

If you really like the year and style then 300 could be realistic but did you try putting a ice pick in the frame. I think you will find better candidates but like I said in an earlier post if you plan to keep it then maybe it is worth getting. Lots of tar around the windows and they will take a lot of time to clean up. If it isn't screaming buy me then walk away. You will find something else better.

If it were me and I had a covered area or shop to work on it, anything less than $500 would be ok (at least where I live) provided the chassis frame is not cracked or bent. Frame work can get pricey if you have to hire someone to do it for you. The floor, wall framing, panels inside and maybe even some of the cabinets will have to be totally rebuilt, and all new systems. Will it need new skin? If so lots of $$ for that too. But if this is THE model you have always wanted and it will be your baby and not a resale, then maybe it's worth it to you. I've seen and owned worse. I sold my worse one cuz I knew I didn't want to keep it in the long run. I am currently doing a frame up, all in, no holding back reno and it's no joke in time, problems to figure out, and money. But its the trailer of my dreams so I have no problem working on it every day! Good luck to you!!

honeybee Did you buy it? I thought I should chime in here. I bought my first trailer in a similar condition to that and I ended up fighting it the whole time to try and fix some things that were just shot. I saved money upfront, but it was costing me so much once I was into it that looking back I can see it wasn't my best decision. Fortunately, @vikx here helped me decide to sell it to someone as is, and they were happy to take it from there. I now have a much better candidate I am working on. Don't want to discourage you if your heart is set on it.. but I think it's important to look at both sides. I have a personal core value for making decisions. ... it goes like this: If I can't get peace on something, I consider it a "no" for me, as it's my guts way of staying unsettled and warning me. When I am supposed to do something I "know" in my "Knower" and I have not regretted that. Good luck on your journey..

Great opinions!
How about this idea? If you could get it for $300, get it home(safely) and then tear into it. If it looks like it's just going to be too much work and expense, salvage the stove, the windows along with the much coveted wings. I am sure you could easily get your money out of it by selling all of those. This assumes you have the time. For some of us, that's a commodity we don't have enough of.
BTW, are those "new" tires trailer tires or car tires?
Then take the trailer chassis to the dump or scrap dealer or sell that too to someone who can make it into a utility trailer.
Just another opinion.

When we went to look at ours it was in probably worse shape than this one. It had 2 windows missing, been painted with house paint inside and out and door was trash but my gut told me that it was ours. We brought it home and after 2 years,a lot of help from this site and many a** chewings from Larry we now have a complete dinged up ,water tight ,functional trailer that we actually camped in last night
