Hello to everyone. Over the last two years I think I have read every single thread on this forum (some of them many times) and I think it's time to introduce myself. I bought my 1962 Shasta Airflyte in April of 1978 for $1000 when I was 19 years old. My family had a small cottage on a private lake 2 hours north of Toronto, Ontario that was not quite private enough for my girlfriend and I. With my limited budget, I bought the already old trailer so we could have a private place on the lake of our own. The following July with the help of my father and brother, we rolled the trailer onto a floating dock and rowed that Shasta to it's new home across the lake on a windswept point with the most beautiful sunset views. The photo in my avatar is the only photo I have of that day and that's me in the back of the boat and my younger brother in the front. My girlfriend became my wife the next year and we camped there every summer, first alone and then with our two young boys who came in 1986 and 1988. This continued until 1997 when we abandoned the camper and moved into our brand new cottage across the bay. Although the new cottage was big and beautiful with all the luxuries, we had the best summers of our lives on the lake in that little camper.
The neglected trailer became water damaged inside so a couple of years ago I decided I would scrap it and went on-line to see if there might be any interest in the old parts. I was shocked to see what the parts were selling for on Ebay and immediately regretted throwing away the wings in 1978 because they seemed out of style at the time. Shortly after I found this forum and within a few hours I realized that not only was this camper salvageable, it would become my new passion. I'm retiring soon and cannot imagine a better thing to do in my spare time than travel across North America in that old Shasta that holds so many dear memories for my wife and I.
I'm planning on floating the trailer back from that point this July with the help of my brother and my grown up sons and will do a full frame-off restoration in a new 24 x 32 shop that I built specifically with this project in mind.
Once I get going I'll post my progress and hopefully get some of that fantastic advice everyone here is so generous with.
