My wife and I are building a vintage camper from scratch, starting with a reclaimed trailer frame and some vintage windows and door. We're modelling the layout on our 1963 Friendship Vacationaire (described in another thread) that uses two opposing 28 inch sofas with an aisle between them. The sofa backs and seats will re-form into an almost (short) king size bed when the aisle is bridged with plywood pieces.
We are adjusting that plan by building two 28" x 74" opposing bunks that could either stay separated or join into a double bed. We like that in either format, one can get up in the night without having to crawl over the other because we sleep with feet facing the front. You can just slide out the bottom and crawl back in and not disturb the other.
So, wondering if anyone has done this, and if so, what did you use for the mattress? We've seen a few on Amazon and Etrailer. Ideas anyone? '

I've always like the idea of the opposing sofa/bed. On beds with odd dimensions we've done well buying a memory foam mattress from Walmart (bed in a box) and cutting it to size. I like the 10" for sleeping but it would require a lower base to be comfortable as a sofa.
Cover is carefully cut off one side. I cut the foam with the saws-all but I've heard an electric butcher knife works well: Cut and Resew the cover back on. If cutting the foam in half for matching beds you'll need to make a new cover for one side.
Very affordable and comfortable. Under $200.

Yes. The best way to cut foam cushion is to use an electric carving knife. I don't know if they sell them any longer but I bought my 1970s one from a thrift store for $2 and because they used to make things to last forever it still works great.

I think you dont need to cut any foam if you consider to buy from Nest Bedding, because I also bought a mattress for my jeep from there according to my requirements, because every size of mattress is available, and really its an easy way to buy.
