You can not believe how many emails I get just like this one. It breaks my heart when I see this and it's not meant to belittle anyone. It's just a heads up of what some people go through because they did not research what they were getting involed with before they made a foolish purchase.
The Email...
Hi I have just baught a 77 Scotty, It has water damage and will probably need extencive repairs. in the closet next to the shower you can see daylight at the top of closet and the back curb side rear has extensive rot. The roof has been tared, and is in Bad shape.would you replace the roof or can it be scraped and re used? I have a limited budget so I need to get by as cheap as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Unfortunately the only advice I could give him was that as far as I could tell he had a complete rebuild to look forward to.
Everything is rebuildable. Not everything is restorable.

Classic case of failed roof goop, water has probably creeped under and into crannies, rotting the aluminum... Not a low budget fix.

It's so sad to see things like this, but it is what happens at the top of a "boom." Mobil, I remember you saying in another thread that people were always sending you emails asking about the cheapest or easiest way to do a repair. You voiced your frustration that they don't seem to ask about the best way. This will be an expensive fix, since the skin needs replacing, but if not for that, the most expensive item used is time. And time is what people who don't know what they're in for is one thing they don't want to spend a lot of. He could get a new piece of skin for the roof for a couple hundred dollars, it's the couple hundred hours of work to do the repairs that really adds up.

I just don't know who would look at that and think "hey, I can fix that for next to nothing."

The question is how close to next to nothing do you wish to be. I know guys that think next to nothing is a couple grand and others that think it is $50.00.

I love it when you hear, "Cheap as possible"!
The 1958 Mallard trailer that I currently rebuilding looked just like this one on the inside rear, but actually looked "better" on the roof. I've just crossed the $7000 "in parts only" mark, and have "over 400 hours" of labor in it so far, and it's not yet finished.
You have to be very committed to take on this type of repair. Most people (even many in our hobby) have no idea how much time it takes for this type of repair. Your not going to get it done in a couple of weekends with any kind of quality work.

I have always said " IF IT'S CHEAP IT AIN'T GOOD AND IF IT'S GOOD IT AIN'T CHEAP"
It seems to be the truth with most repairs on cars or your homes.
