Painting my Westerner is giving me fits! She's all primed for George Kirby's marine grade paint but I may be chickening out doing the final coats myself. The weather has been tough to do the roll and tip method as planned and I'm terrified of sprayers. So, I contacted an autobody shop that does Rvs too. He said he can do 1 or 2 part PPG auto paint for around $2 grand, but the primer I put on would have to go and that'd be extra to remove so probably closer to $3 grand. Ugh. All that work for nothing. So now what do I do? I'm still thinking on it. In the mean time here are some pics of where I am with her as of today. Installing windows and such to get her ready to spray in case I go that route. Lights are going in as well. The screen door turned out pretty well, and will go in this weekend. 20200819_195710 by 20200819_195653 by 20200819_195725 by 20200818_104032 by 20200818_104730 by

I was terrified of sprayers as well, but if you have a harbor freight nearby, their purple hvlp gun is great and around $15 or less with coupon. Get a can of rustoleum for $8 and use the whole can practicing, getting the right thinness, the right adjustments. There are youtube videos that help a lot. Paint every thing in your yard and you will not be afraid. I've never sprayed before or since but I would do it again.
My advice, leave the windows out, easier to tape. Use the primer you already did but make sure the final coat manufacturer approves (call them). Go for it.

She's starting to come to life! The grab handle has blue plexiglass inserts and a small LED light inside. Looks kind of cool especially with the amber 12v bulb lit up inside the trailer. Oh and I think I am going to spray paint as soon as the weather allows it. Gulp. Thanks for the encouragement y'all! 20200821_204626 by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/185048628@N07/

The way cool new and improved Bum Shelter rides again :-). Good call on spraying yourself - just do your homework (gobble up YouTube vids), PRACTICE, save $3K+ and be able to say you did it yourself. Decent gun, compressor, water trap, masking supplies and elbow grease. If you have a sag/run or two you can sand them out and re-shoot a section. Once you get the hang of spraying - most of the work is in prep and cleaning - spraying is the easy part.

Still waiting to paint this little thang. While I wait for weather that's not so darn hot, windy or humid, or all three I am getting her appraised so I can insure her for agreed value before I take her anywhere. So that's been interesting. I've also hung the curtains! Next I glued the 3" latex topper to the 4" upholstery foam and cut it to size to make our mattress. Slipped it into a mattress protector and we have bed! And I got the AC running! Takes up some room in the wardrobe but the good thing is I can remove it for cool season camping, which is what we do most often anyway. It works pretty well, so well in fact that my husband worked in there all day yesterday for a change of pace! Caught him giving one of his Zoom conference calls a tour of the little camper too. Watching him walk around her with his computer open while people asked him questions and oohed and awed was pretty funny! Anyway, I hope the next pics you see will be her all painted up, rock guard attached, etc, etc. 20200826_184956 by 20200826_184845 by 20200826_184747 by 20200826_184909 by 20200825_131130 by

Kerry, thank you for posting the pix of your interior. It helps other Westerner owners on the trail behind you. I really like the color of your linoleum. I don't remember seeing it before, but it's been a while since I read through your thread. If you didn't post about it, where did you get it? Color and manufacturer?
Perhaps I missed it. What is the white toggle switch next to the magazine rack for? And why is the outlet on that side have a lower extension?
Always a joy to see your latest posts on this project.
Cheers,
Rod

Cheers, Rod Hey Rod, thanks for the kind words. The toggle switch is a little old fashioned looking on/off switch for the fan. And the outlet cover, I have two fo them in the trailer, has a built in usb port under the regular outlets. I don't know why but I just liked how retro they looked. The linoleum is Wilsonart that I got from Lowes for CHEAP! I have plenty left over that I could send you if you wanna pay shipping. However, it may be cheaper to buy a sheet from your local Lowes, shipping rates are going up, up, up! But PM me with your address if you are interested, so I can check shipping cost. PS: Paint starts tomorrow! Wilsonart Pomegranate laminate

Couldn't resist showing the progress of painting so far since it's supposed to rain for the next few days bringing painting to a screeching halt. I decided to paint he Westerner like the old advertisement. Never seen it done and since I like to be a bit different, I figured what the heck. Besides seems the old "Z" or chevron is on everything. Oh and I ended up painting her by hand like a boat. What can I say, I'm a big chicken and basically broke too. Still have the white to do next as soon as the weather permits. 20200830_220749 by For Your Traveling Vacation by

I think you did the right thing painting it yourself. Paying somebody $2000-$3000 is too much.
It is a royal hassle when you’re dealing with the weather in our area, isn’t it? If it’s not the rain, it’s the humidity, or the pollen, or the bugs, or the snow, or 95° heat...

The paint job is finished! Yahoo!! What a chore. I'd say it's a 20+ foot job. Good enough for me. And for anyone that wants to know, Kirby Marine Paint was a challenge on aluminum. It's not made for it, it's made for wood. But if you want to go that route prime first with an aluminum primer, then two or three thin coats of Kirbys that has been thinned using their conditioner and a bit of Penetrol. That was the best combo. But if and when I ever do this again, which is doubtful, I will definitely spray. Most likely I will pay someone to do it for me. I'm getting too old for this crap! Anywho, here's a couple pics. Her tires are off cuz I just put new ones on her wheels and finally found a spare wheel too. I figure it will easier to finish her trim without the wheels and tires on anyway. Next pics you see will be a finished trailer. One year of almost constant work! Here's the taping and paper. What a trick that is, bit using the 3M Fine line 3/4 inch tape made it almost easy. Thanks for that rec NCcamper!! 20200904_145720 by
Here's the finished paint job. Went old school with the design and colors. 20200906_143947 by 20200906_143959 by 20200906_144050 by 20200906_144103 by

Hey Kerry,
You beat me too it, LOL! I have considered that paint job for my Westerner for a long time. I like how you kept the white band just below the top edge of the W. When you get a chance, once it's out of the carport, post a picture taken from far away so we can get the full view.
Excellent!
