Hello All! Just wanted to post some pics at the beginning of my restore. She is a 57 Westerner Pony Express that was found sitting in the Arizona desert last spring. Someone out here in VA bought her on a trip out West and dragged her back east and flipped her. I am sure I paid a little too much for her considering the shape she's in but I really didn't mind because this is exactly what I wanted and these are almost impossible to find east of the Mississippi. She had the usual rot, but even worse she was just disgusting with rat poo stuck to the floor by rat pee. On a good not she has all of her hardware and most of her innards but all the wood has to replaced because of the rat damage. Anyway, I got her down to the frame now and trying to find someone to sandblast it so I can straighten and re-weld the step and maybe lengthen the tongue, then paint it. Meanwhile I will begin the task of rebuilding cabinets, finding and ordering ash plywood, etc. There seems to be several suppliers out east but trying to find one closer than 4 hours away is the trick at this point.

Looks like you're in for some good fun. Westerner sure has a great shape. And as they say on facebook "all the hard work is done". You'll find an answer for almost every question here.

So was it a Rum Shelter or a Bum shelter? Bum Shelter. Probably should have been Rat Shelter. I can only imagine what this poor little trailer has seen.

Been a while since I posted anything except questions or comments so I figure I'd show some progress on my Westerner. For every step forward it seems I've taken at least a half a step back but I tend to learn things the hard way so no problem. Here's a few pics of where I am as of today. Plumbing, propane and electric will start soon and the wrap, once it's shellacked is ready for install as well. I can't wait for that! As Vikx says "It's starting to look like a trailer!" As background, the box under the bed will house an electric cooler powered by 12v or 110. It will pull out on a slide and opens from the top. The AC in the wardrobe is being installed so it can be removed for cooler season camping. During cold weather camping we will have a Wave 3 that will not be permanently attached but have a connection under the stove when needed. It's coming along nicely after many trials and tribulations but with a little help from Vikx, Larry, NCCamper and Teachndad...oh and my table saw operator/wannabe tradesman husband, John, I got this! PS: the only tool I am still scared of is the table saw. 20200421_180401 by Kerry Iliff, on Flickr 20200413_084655 by Kerry Iliff, on Flickr 20200413_155355 by Kerry Iliff, on Flickr

That is amazingly beautiful, you guys! REALLY very nice. I hope you are going to keep the Bum Shelter on the front, LOL. Be so proud. You guys have made gold. I have structure envy. That's a mighty nice cover. Keep it comin. The end is near. Cheers, Rod

To add a description or two for the photos above. I have started curbing. A painstaking process for sure! Also I am showing you the new dinette table laminate, a converted propane to 12v lamp with amber bulb. Doors on some cabinets and the refrigerator under the bed on a pull out shelf that operates on both 12v and 110. Oh and insulation by way of foam board and Reflectix.

Is the intent to use the icebox for storage then? How long can that cooler run off a single deep cycle battery charge.

Is the intent to use the icebox for storage then? How long can that cooler run off a single deep cycle battery charge. Yes, the icebox will basically be a cupboard for us. Not sure right now about the cooler. I know it draws 5A when in 12v mode. Lots of info in the reviews and questions on Amazon. This is the model I have: ICECO GO20 Dual Zone Portable Refrigerator, Separate Control, 21 Quart/20 Liter, DC & AC, 0℉ to 50℉, with Danfoss Compressor, Mini Fridge Cooler Refrigerator. It's not meant to be used in an RV really but in a car, etc. However the trick is to provide adequate ventilation for the unit which we will do by adding a small vent under the bed nearby. I will update info on the cooler after we have used it.
