One of mine had metal "hangers" for the ceiling. If you are trying to save the original ceiling, maybe wide metal trim? If the ceiling panels over lap the rafters, staple them as well. For some reason, Shasta came up with the idea that floating panels would be great. Not so.
In any case, you will need wood or metal to replace the hangers. Let us know what you come up with.

That's pretty much where I am going with this. Replace it old style. Worked for decades and decades...

Hi Vikx, Thank you for your reply. I am not saving any paneling...too much damage. I was trying to save the "hangers," but broke one. Would you mind sending a picture of what you mean, please? I'm sorry. This is all so foreign to me. Thank you! Heather

You can just barely see the trim sticks and screws on the above panels. (repurposed narrow panels) I stapled the panels, then screwed the trim stick into the rafter. The same can be done with metal but if you are replacing the ceiling, I would use trim sticks that match. You can also use decor washers if you like the metal "button" look.

Awesome! So basically attaching the ceiling panel to the joists, and then covering the seams, where the panels join, with a thinner strip of wood?
