I see a lot of people having trouble knowing where to look to find what the are looking for or where to start a new Thread. So I was thinking we should have a fast find index that listed things in alphabetical order and where to look for them. This would not list each thread, it would just list general items something like this: Tire Information= Undercarriage category VINS= Vin and title category, Skin= Exterior Repair category,Posting pictures and so on. I think this would be a fantastic tool for newbies and some times useful to every one. What do the rest of you think. Please give this some serious thought and I am sure any suggestions would be welcome from both old timers and first timers. This might even lighten the admins work load moving the thing we put in the wrong place.

How about some opinions? Do you think it would be a help in showing where to look for a given thing?

Why not start by putting our categories in alphabetical order. A list so we could see it? Include the content of each category, of course.
We could do it with numbers, so that members could add to the list. I can edit, then delete as we're doing with the diagrams.
Just some thoughts.

I just thought that maybe I was speaking a little too much for myself. I hate to see the admins of a free site have to work more to do redundant things because some of us might be too "busy" to get to know the site. So my opinion is that this idea might be a little redundant due to the fact that we already have an index page which is the front page. All one needs to do is spend an hour getting to know the site. What I think will happen here is that the "quick find" index will become so cluttered that you will need yet another quick find page to add to the already redundant quick find page that you propose to put up to help out the few that don't bother to research the site.
So in other words, I think it's too much for too few with more problems ahead. But then again I'm not the one who has to maintain the site so the yay or nay needs to come from Admin. Not me. That's why I deleted my opinion.

I really like the way the board is set up. Fewer categories does make it less cluttered but at the same time adding a few more specific sub-categories wouldn't hurt. For instance, Cushions or Upholstery, Tires, Brakes, Hitches/Couplers, Appliances, Hardware. Or indexing, whatever makes it easy to find a specific subject without scrolling through unrelated threads. Undercarriage is a very broad category. I was looking for tires on the shelf, not under the carriage The search engine here is actually very good, but a simple search is limited while an advanced search can be specific or yield unrelated topics. As far as staying on topic, a lot of good stuff comes from those threads that stray off track. Otherwise, nobody here would be thinking out of the box, Thanks Vikx for being open to suggestions. I hope you get the best of both worlds, easy on you and easily navigable for members.

This has been a very informative thread! In the past I have never used the search feature, I have simply gone to the board and looked at the category I am interested in and looked through the various threads. Like Suzie stated, that has the advantage of seeing things that you may not be specifically looking for but still be interesting or be a topic that can be of future use. So, because of this thread, I will now be using the search feature along with the "trolling" method I have used in the past. If I were to make any suggestions for an upgrade, which I really don't think we need, It would be to simply add a "key" word search. This to be placed on the home page where it would be readily available when you access the site. Lots of vendors use this method and I think it is not only simple but also very useful.

The advanced search engine is in the toolbar at the top of the page but there is a keyword search located in the top right hand corner of the page under the ad next to "Actions."
Also the "Bookmark" feature in actions is handy for referencing finds in the future. It is in the "Actions" dropdown. Or you can bookmark the thread when you post a "Reply" by using the wheel in the right upper corner. Unfortunately, I can't find a way to bookmark individual comments.

I have tried to use the key word search feature, it doesn't work for me??? so I gave up. My suggestion of a key word search feature would be on the home page and search all of the threads, not just the immediate one. That way if you wanted to look at tire posts, it would bring them all up. If you wanted to be more specific you could use the advance search feature that is available. Again, I like the way we are set up now. So not a huge deal.

What we are thinking is not an index of every post but some thing like this: Brakes------------- section to look under Electric convertor----- " ----" --" ---" Water tanks ----------"-----"---"--- " Windows -------------"---- "-- "---- " Springs ---------------"----"--- "--- " Upholstery ------------"--- "--- "--- " Gas Lights ------------"---- "--- "--- " and so on arranged in alphabetical order, this would allow us a better idea of where to post what and it would help people learn the site possibly easier. What seems easy for some of us is very hard for others. Hopefully it would make vikx's job easier plus make new users feel more at home. Example how often is things like where do I find my vin number or how do I post a picture, appear. This would help those people find the information instantly (almost) instead of waiting till some one can answer them. And yes I know the information is already here BUT evidently people have trouble knowing where to look.
