Would anyone here ever buy a car with no title? No? You wouldn't??? Well then why would someone buy a trailer without a title? ? At the very least you should make sure that you CAN title the trailer before buying it. Put a down payment on it and then head for the DMV. Once you are sure it's not hot or salvaged, you can complete the purchase... Make sure that if it won't title you get your deposit back. If you can't title the trailer it is worthless to anyone but the real owner.

I agree completely, without a title a vintage camper would have to be $100 and local.
Some states will let you register and issue a title with a bill of sale. I don't live in one of those states.

I have done it many times. All states don't require titles. Alabama didn't title vehicles till somewhere around 1980 I think.
Buying a older vehicle or camper without a title isn't a problem here at all.

Maine is supposed to be the easiest state to get a title.

Georgia will not even issue a title for older cars trucks campers even if you want to and are willing to pay the fee. BUT in turn.....it makes it pretty easy to get them tagged with a bill of sale. They do run a numbers check with the new system that was implemented a couple of months ago.

In CA it's pretty easy but you must make sure it's not stolen or salvaged before you buy or you could be out some money. In NV it's VERY difficult to obtain a title with just a bill of sale. Lots of hoops to jump through and a lot of extra paper work.

Indiana is fairly easy too. I've done a couple. Had an old 30' camper we scrapped and reused the frame. VIN was too rusted to read. BMV suggested calling it an assembled trailer, fill out a form to apply for VIN and mail in with local police inspection. After receiving new VIN, stamp out on aluminum tag and attach to the tongue. A follow-up police inspection, a trip to the BMV, and they mail you the title. $15 for the application, $5 for local police report, and $15 for title.

We waited the 3 years in WA, we knew it was legit, but without the original title, the new title says that it’s 15 years newer than it really is. Oh well, anyone who knows trailers, knows.

My state is easy too...
You pay for the DMV search of the vin at window #1, Then pay to set up an inspection at window #2, Then wait a couple months for the inspector, Then go back to the DMV because you were issued form 38570 instead of 38571, Then go to window #1 and pay for the mistake they made last visit, Then back to window #2 and pay for another inspection, Then wait for a different inspector who says you don't need an inspection on a 50 year old camper, Then go back to DMV where they notice the Bill of Sale from the former owner is out of state, "Go back to window #1 and pay for out the out of state title request...and where is your bond paperwork?"
I like how they did it before computers... The supervisor turns his back, you slide an envelope with cash across his desk, then you look away, the envelope disappears and in it's place is the title.

Michigan doesnt require a title for trailers weighing under 2500lbs, just a registration. So as long as you have the VIN and you print out their bill of sale paper from online and get it weighed, then you are good to go. They do run it in MI only to make sure its not stolen in this state.

So as long as you have the VIN and you print out their bill of sale paper from online and get it weighed, then you are good to go. They do run it in MI only to make sure its not stolen in this state. Same for Florida, but the limit is 2,000 lbs. Bill of sale, weight statement, and you're done. If it's already been registered in Florida, you don't even need the weight statement. Or anybody can say any trailer is homemade, provide a weight statement, and get a registration (with a new VIN, but they don't inspect to make sure you applied the VIN to the trailer). If it's over 2,000, a homemade trailer requires a bit more red tape. They want a list of materials, receipts for the materials (who keeps that?), they charge for an inspection, then will provide a VIN, then charge for a follow-up inspection to ensure you placed the VIN properly. A less-honest person might be motivated to simply provide a weight slip of a lighter (or unfinished) trailer, and bypass the red tape.

This thread just scared the poo out of me! I have a long road ahead of me to get a title. The trailer was abandoned, so I didn't buy a trailer without the pinks at least. But there's no one to give me a bill of sale either. The mail left inside is from 2004 when the guy was fired from Los Alamos. 😬

I made ALL of the mistakes when I purchased my 56 Jewel. I read numerous blogs on what to look for and avoid when purchasing a vintage; rot, odor, someone lived in it, missing parts, and especially clean title- and threw it out the window. Trailer had not been registered for 10 years, I thought that meant I had to just pay a fee to get it back in system. Nope, in CA buyer is responsible to pay for the back fees and penalties. They wanted $750 ( which is what I paid for the trailer in the first place). Was able to get them to knock the penalties off. Also, the guy who sold it to me was not the owner on title and DMV would not let me change it over in my name if I didnt know original owners name. They would not tell me who owned it or how to get ahold of him. I called CHP and they were able to do a search if it was impounded. Thankfully it had been and they gave me the owners name. I had to scour the interweb to find him and called various numbers to try to contact him. Then I found a site that said he had been deceased. DMV took off penalties beacause of that and accepted bill of sale, a Statement of Facts and $450 to change it over
