What are thoughts about leaving exterior plain aluminum? We are having a hard time finding a shop that can paint the ‘54 Jewel for a price we can afford and we really don’t want tackle THAT job in the middle of Phoenix in the summer. Could we keep her “naked”, paintless until we saved enough money to paint her? Granted, we’d then probably have to pay more for taping because the windows and J-rail would be on.

Depending on the pattern you are wanting for your final project. You could check with companies that do vinyl decals/ pin striping same type product that is used on law information cars and EMS trucks. That’s what we are looking into for ours. It’s just as durable as paint. Debra

Question, when you say to sand the aluminum prior to painting and sand sand and sand again.....what are you using to sand? Are you buffing or sanding? What grade?

He is referring to sand paper, a very fine grit. I cant remember what number I used. Maybe nccamper will chime in with what number he used.

Hi Friends, You can keep it bare naked like it is, but it will begin to oxidize over time. The aluminum will dull out and start to look grey, but it takes a long time to do that. Here is what it would look like over time. Cheers, Rod

Has anyone tried NCCAMPER's self painting project indoors? I have the good fortune of having my project inside in a larger, 3-4 car but not tooooo large garage with quite a bit of other stuff in there. Is it feasible to do without overspraying my workshop area, the walls, the boxes of stuff, and bikes in there?

Cover everything... or hang sheeting around the paint area. It WILL creep around.

Look up home made paint booths, if your doing this indoors everything will get overspray.
EVERYTHING!

Even outside I cover as much as possible because of over-spray. I'd wait to put windows and jrail on until paint is finished. You miss some camping this summer but the paint job will be better.
Sorry it took so long to chime in. I was off the grid.

Not a stupid question at all. Most people think when they're spraying that all the paint goes the same direction. Most does, but not all.
Btw, don't forget to cover yourself. I had green hair for a few days after painting my first car.

We found a guy here in Phoenix who has been polishing airplanes and trailers for 25 years and had quite an established business. Price was perfect for us. Better than any paint job and I love the look of it. $1000 to polish of $1300 to get scratches and dents out as well. He said it should last about 5 years here in Arizona. We will definitely be going this route when we have the money. What are thoughts about leaving exterior plain aluminum?
