I bought this replacement valve, on the right, for the old cracked on the left.
When I started looking at these, it became clear that the 1 1/2 inch inlet on both are "downstream" from the large 3" valve that empties the tank. This means on neither valve allows for the water from the 1 1/2" inlet to drain into the tank, unless the 3" valve is open. It seems like the 3" valve should remain closed, and collecting all the grey and black water, until it is time to drain the tank.
Can anyone clarify how this ought to be set up and what the functional intention is here?
Thanks, Mark

I believe the smaller line is a for a gray water tank and the larger one is black water, if you have both. Then you can drain the black water and "rinse" with the gray water.

Kudzu thanks for your comments (and for confirming the photo link issue, I have put in another I hope is OK)
The thing is, I find no evidence whatever for a "grey water" tank ever having been there, and the previous 1 1/2" line was connected from sink directly to this valve. Was it just supposed to "drain to ground" if not hooked up to a park wasteline? That's all I can figure.

I was thinking on this and realized that was probably what you had and that is why you were confused. My first motor home was exactly like you described. The gray water had no tank and bypassed the valve and would drain on the ground. This is frowned on now and will get you kicked out of a campground. BTW, if you look on your photo on Flikr, there is an curving arrow at the bottom right, that is a link to help you share the photo. You can get the proper URL so you can share it using the photo icon in the tool bar.

Thanks, Kudzu: Yes, you know, I figured something like that and just put it in. It does have this nice cap to keep the grey water in and unscrew and open to a drain at a park. Here's a pic if you dare to look; I checked the link and all I get is a drain. Keeping fingers crossed. flic.kr/p/RAHdxV
