Mods, please move thread if needed, I wasn't quite sure where to post this. Just trying to figure everything out with the new trailer I recently acquired Sorry for the dumb questions, but under one of my table seats ....next to the water heater is this cylinder-shaped thing....what is it? thumbnail_20181219_224641 by Granger Gallegos, on Flickr I was also curious on all the wiring. There is a red & black wire that comes up through the floor from outside of the trailer & into the compartment. On the outside of trailer, the black wire is grounded to the trailer frame & the red is separate from the trailer 7-way plug & has an alligator clip. Both the red & black wires are connected with other wires which then run to the cylinder thing, a pressure gauge, a cigarette lighter socket & some toggle switches. thumbnail_20181219_191808 by Granger Gallegos, on Flickr thumbnail_20181219_214041 by Granger Gallegos, on Flickr thumbnail_20181219_214028 by Granger Gallegos, on Flickr thumbnail_20181219_224528 by Granger Gallegos, on Flickr Is there a chance that a 12v battery was used in the compartment to run whatever this cylinder thing is along with the cigarette lighter socket, pressure gauge & toggle switches? Or would it just use power from the tow vehicles battery?

Questions are always welcome here unless it concerns GOOP. LOL
The black black/red wires have to be grounds to different 12 volt components. That's why we have confusion on colors, in the old days automotive grounds were black, so it makes sense that would follow along with a trailer. Nowadays, WHITE is ground in RVs. They're not like cars at all...
You could clean the grounds up a bit by mounting a secure bracket and connecting all the same wires on a bolt. Lots more cleaning to do but start there.
I'm wondering if the cylinder is some sort of solenoid. That's what it looks like, but why? Is there a 3rd wire lead? At first I thought it was a water pump, so what do I know?

I'm thinking an air pump also. Cooling fins on the cylinder, pressure gauge. What for....IDK

My first guess was water pump for the onboard system. Most all of them run on 12-volt so as to be used when shore power is not available. An air compressor makes more sense, though it would be more obvious with inspection of more of the water system. Air pressurized systems all had a gauge at some point in the system. Also, the compressor would only have to be run periodically, thus the toggle switch. The lighter plug looks like a previous-owner-add-on to me. That would explain the bundling of wiring looking like it does. The 12-V source battery would not be kept in this compartment, but rather more likely outside. Most were mounted on the tongue of the trailer. The wiring is run from a harness into the trailer compartments where needed.

Thanks everybody for your responses! With the pressure gauge, it makes better sense to me now that it is an air pump. The hose that comes out of the air pump runs to the pressure gauge & then runs out the bottom of the trailer. Looking under the trailer I found where the hose comes out & is connected to a valve stem, where it can be filled with air. It would also make sense that there is a red & black wire running out of the trailer to the hitch, where a battery could of been to hook up to run it. Thanks again for all the help fellers!
