Welds are strong as the surrounding metal if done properly. now the problem is if you are welded to a 1/8 inch piece of steel your connection is only as strong as the steel at the edge of the weld. Next problem is fastening a hitch on with just bolts. I have seen many hitches fail because someone used just a bolt, lock washer and nut to fasten the hitch on. If you want a safe secure hitch always cut some nice rectangular plates out of some 1/4 inch steel and place under the bolt on the side of the frame opposite the hitch, this spreads the load over a much larger area of the frame helping to prevent metal fatigue and ultimate failure. A few minutes extra work can make all the difference in the world. As manufactures strive to make vehicles as light as possible they are using thinner lighter materials making back up plates even more critical than ever.
