Hello, I was wondering if anyone has installed a toilet in a Shasta Compact. There is a great little closet to put one in. Mine is a 1964. My current idea is to put the black water tank in the closet build a platform above it to fit the toilet on. I'll also be flipping the springs to give the cleanout clearance as she's very low to the ground. there will be a 7" step up into toilet room. I'll feed water via gravity from a 3 gallon container above the toilet (or bigger depending what I can find for it). that will be fillable from an opening in the top. There is a sketch on an "under construction" page of My blog on rebuilding her if it doesn't show up below. rejuvenatingmarcella.wordpress.com/2018/09/19/toilet-room-ideas/
here's a very rough sketch..

A toilet has been added to our Compact but we have no tank, it is a park / direct hook up only. We are not real tall but there isn’t a lot of head room in a Compact. It is nice to not have to go to an outhouse after dark or in the middle of the night. Make sure you have a plan for transporting your hoses you don’t want them inside your camper.

Many of us use a Thetford Curve porta potty. Great in small space, easy to empty..no plumbing involved for about $150 with mounting base on Amazon.

debranch, thanks for the tip. Hadn't though of where to store a hose. I do a lot of fishing and will have something to hold rods on the exterior made from 4" dia black plastic pipe. I can probably rig something like that to hold a clean out hose. there is no bumper.. maybe I can fabricate something like a bumper to hold it. I'm not very tall so the height of the closet isn't an issue. Thanks again. turbodaddy, I have though about the porta potties but I often camp out for a few weeks at a time a long way from any running water. I'd like something with more capacity if I can get it figured out.

For "a few weeks at a time" look into composting toilets...

We turned Hamlet’s closet into a potty room with a shower, but we have never stayed in one place without even pit toilets for a few weeks at a time. When you say you have no running water on these trips, do you mean there are no hookups at all, and you’re completely dry camping? Or do you camp in places with pit toilets and a water spigot? If it’s the latter, you could make a porta potty work, otherwise, I’d go with vikx suggestion and look into a composting toilet.
Another question... how are you managing fresh water and waste now on long trips? Will you plan on carrying 5-gallon containers of water along or can you rely on water that you haul from a stream or lake?
When we’re camping in Hamlet, we have found that if we’re very, very careful, we can get by for about three days on 15 gallons. That includes cooking, cleaning, drinking and water for the porta potty. By the end of that time, the potty needs to be emptied and the water tank refilled.
I’m sure there’s someone else out there who has done a long stay as you have. I’ll be looking forward to the comments...we are always looking for ways to improve how we useHamlet.

I've only seen it done once.

I do, but without one of those sharing accounts, I'm really not sure how to attach them here. Any ideas?

It’s not that we’re not computer savvy, we are, we just have chosen not to have those accounts. PM your email and I will forward them to you.

Hamlet, I'd like to see the photos also. I just got the holding tank that will fit the closet. That was my biggest problem at the time. Now I need to flip the axle to get a bit more height above the ground. Where we hunt there isn't any water other than the streams and rivers but that works for keeping tanks full. Its cold and dark up here now so most of the work I am doing is on parts I removed before winter. Garage just isn't big enough to get her inside! really itching to get the roof back on!

Flipping the axle isn't recommended; it causes uneven tire wear. You might be able to move it below the springs if it's on top. That will give you several inches.

Why ? I used a great porta potty with built in tank below. For years before we went to a bigger trailer. My wife never complained , as long as I emptied it . In small spaces, I used small stuff. Using the porta potty was easier to get rid of any odor quickly.
