This was not the typical Honda Civic tow vehicle accident either. I am betting this was caused by sudden tire failure, sudden reaction or swerve, or some other factor not evident in the photos.

All 4 tires look intact in the second photo. I followed a big trailer the other day and it had some definite sway after any movement, so there are a lot of potential disasters out there waiting for just a small overcorrection on the part of the driver. This was not the typical Honda Civic tow vehicle accident either. I am betting this was caused by sudden tire failure, sudden reaction or swerve, or some other factor not evident in the photos.

Probably loaded tail heavy, got sway cycling started and didn't have experience on how to stop the sway. It only gets worse as you know

Must have swayed an awful lot considering it ended up in the opposite direction of on-coming traffic???

Hard breaking? Jack-knife?
Hubs was mad because I didn't break to let a fast moving truck who was supposed to yield onto the highway. I had a motorcycle coming up fast passing me and another car on the outside lane so no where to go except stay in my right lane. The un-yielding truck had to slow down and almost break, well so what? He had his own lane and no one behind him. I was not going to hit my breaks hard at 60 mph and risk jack-knifing and killing a speeding motorcyclist in the process because it was not necessary to do so. You just don't know what the situation was unless you see it happening. Poquito

Something happened drastic for a large tow vehicle like that one to bust through the guard rail. Also the trailer being upside down and still be connected would take a ton of force. Unlikely to happen if being towed at a reasonable tow speed.

Looks like its a "toy hauler" type trailer, looks like a ramp gate on the rear of the trailer. Judging by the ladders and such it was probably loaded for some construction work. Probably tail heavy.
FWIW those big E350 vans weigh about 7000# empty
