So while working on my 1966 Kenskill trailer, I was thinking about the original Atwood water heater it has. Haven’t tested it. Should I just get a new one and not risk it leaking down the road? Also has anyone put in a newer Atwood Water heater in and are there any fit problems?

There's several parts to the answers to this set of questions. First, regarding leaks, I have seldom heard of the heaters themselves leaking, usually it is the plumbing surrounding the heater. It is possible of course, since it really amounts to a wide spot in the plumbing. There are also replacements for just the holding tank available for the Atwood heaters too. It sure seems like a lot of trouble if it does spring a leak to replace the tank, since there are so many other factors to go wrong as well. propane plumbing, valves, controls, and such. Atwood has changed hands over the years, but they have retained all of the original fitment specs. I replaced the one in my '70 Shasta with a new one. It has no electronics involved and was a straight-up apples-for -apples replacement. I added a bypass setup to the new one. It fit right in and plumbed up like it belonged there.

If a PO didn't winterize, the water heater tank could have ruptured. I would test but be ready to turn the water off in a hurry. If the tank itself is leaking, you'll need a new one. Good luck and let us know.
