Well, I should have done this a while ago, but I'm here to report that my 19' Shasta Retro came in back in April. We drove up to see it, looked it over, and asked for our deposit back. The build quality was not acceptable - everything looked like it was done quickly and cheaply. I'd love to see an original, to compare. The 16' version looked better, if only because it was proportional. It felt right, and maybe worth making some allowances if it was big enough for us. For someone starting out, the retro may be fine, but we felt that we'd end up rebuilding much of it to make it acceptable to us. That's energy we can put into our existing Airstream, if needed, and we have made that into pretty much want we want already. So, we're sitting pat.

Well, the parts are supposedly true to the originals (with the stated exceptions of door size and siding profile), so once the trailers get into the market there should be parts for sale through the Shasta dealers. It will be interesting to see how this can be utilized by the vintage community.

The 5'2" rear bed is really just for kids, it seems. The dinette would be made into bed for adults in the 16' version. The 19' has an L shaped couch in back and two sections are pull out gauchos that will make a real bed. The MSRP on the 19' unit seems to be $16400, as that is what we were quoted last week.

Give them the fridge - tell them when they've saved the money for the one they needed, they can buy it for you. Of course, you'll never see it. But, until you do, they'll know what the answer is when they ask for anything else .

Perhaps the LT tires have a high reserve capacity because people will load a truck with whatever it is that they have to move, regardless of the weight. So, the manufacturers leave a wide margin to protect people from themselves. A trailer has a fixed GVWR, and if you buy your tires to suit, you'll be fine. I believe you can subtract the tongue weight from the trailer weight, as that is borne by the tow vehicle, when calculating the necessary tire weight capacity. The C rated Goodyear Marathons on my Airstream (factory equipped) seemed under the needed weight capacity, until you factored in that the tow vehicle is carrying 500#. I moved up to D rated GY Marathons anyway.

You can order a 16' from Mount Comfort in IN or DeHaan in WI for $14,999. There are some saying others are charging more, and others charging less! The only question was the add-on for the 19' length. DeHaan first guessed about 1000/ft more or $3000, but after talking with the rep revised that down to about only $750. I'll let you know what the final number is when it's set .

The 2009 Airflyte was a dud for a couple of reasons that I can see - few windows, all electric only (no LP system), and no obvious connection to Shasta heritage. The 2015 retro will probably be sold out of the limited run shortly after it is officially introduced. Keep in mind that almost everything you've heard to date has been promo work by a dealer, not the factory. At the Open House in mid-Sept, dealers will see the real deal for the first time. Once the retros are gone, the market for good vintage units could see a spike in price.

Glad to hear you figured it out - it is so rewarding, and such a relief, when you finally find the answer.

Yes, both lengths have a hidden a/c unit - instead of putting it up on the roof, they've put in a cabinet on the floor with a wooden front enclosure. Until someone tests it, there is no knowing how well it will work. Hiding it was a nice touch.

The Shasta Retro will be introduced to the dealers at the industry Open House, which is Sept 16-18 in Indiana. Mount Comfort is the only dealer who has seen a unit, and it was the prototype used in the video. The production 16' & 19' units should be ready for the Open House, which is where dealers place orders. The word got out about these before the factory was ready to provide materials and final info, and the dealers were swamped with inquiries. They've been taking orders sight unseen - the price on the 19' is not even fixed yet. The 16' is msrp 14,999, and the 19' is less than $1k more, according to the area rep we spoke with. The 19' I ordered will probably not be delivered until spring, but there will be more info available after the open house. Does anyone know if the public can get into this event? I'd drive down to see what I bought, if I can get in. Our dealer told us no, but maybe someone else knows a way.

A question - how is an awning attached to a Shasta? I'm used to a pull-out Zip Dee, but it looks like a Shasta awning is more free standing. Does it mount to the trailer body, or is it attached just when wanted?
