Hello Everyone!
My trailer came with radial tires when we purchased it. Both were the same size but they were two different manufacturers. I replaced them recently with ST's (Goodyear Endurance ST205/75R15). I saved one of the radials as a possible spare. Can I use the radial as a emergency spare or do I need to buy another ST?
Thanks,
CTS

This depends on what you plan to use your spare for. If you just plan on using it to get to the nearest tire center most any tire will work. But if you want to be able to put it on and go on down the Highway then I would suggest a new matching tire.

There is probably no reason that you could not run one of the original tires as a spare, as long as the sizes match and they pass the "sniff test"... you know, no dry rot or flat spots, etc. Personally I have preferred to run the "ST" rated tires all the way around, but a spare is like insurance. You have it and hope you never need it.

bigbill, just using it as an emergency spare. I've read mixed reviews on using 2 types of tires on a vehicle (bias & radial) with them leaning towards automobiles than trailers. Wasn't sure if it would cause the trailer to sway or show any other signs of instability.
@ten, it looks great and smells even better! Yeah it's just for emergencies really.
We took a road trip last summer with the Scotty from Chicago to The Grand Tetons and back. Somewhere around 3k miles on the mismatched radials and it still pulled really smooth so I'm hoping the new ST's that are on there along with new bearings/race/grease seals it should be (hopefully) smoother.
Thanks again for the input.

I have used old mismatch spares for years but the real question becomes is it better/cheaper to buy a new matching spare when you can shop the price a wait a few days for it to be ordered or have to buy whatever brand at whatever price and maybe wait for it to arrive while on vacation. This is a question each one of us has to answer for him/her self. Years ago (1961) we took a trip from Ohio to the west coast pulling a trailer our car had four recap tires that were in decent shape. Everyone said buy new tires before you go, but we took a chance and didn't. Made the entire trip without a problem. A couple years later we bought a brand new trailer with a new spare included left on a 165 mile trip and wiped out two tires, so one never knows. Whatever you do make certain tires are inflated to max weight rating and check them regularly. God protects fools and children but every now and then we push him past his limits, be careful out there.

bigbill I went ahead and ordered an exact spare. Will be here tomorrow. Just in time for our trip to The Rockies, The Grand Tetons, and Glacier NP. Might hit the Badlands on the way home. Thanks again!

That is a fantastic trip. I have also done that on the 2 lanes from and back.
