Some people have used regular Coleman mantles but I don't suggest doing it. You can order the mantles from Amazon or VTS.
That top piece is a heat deflector. Since heat rises, it keeps it from going straight up. I think you should try to find the top piece. It probably won't hurt anything to try it, but I would not leave it burning for any length of time. just mho.

You can have a local metal shop cut you a circle of aluminum for the lamp top. It's a heat deflector, so larger would be better. I've also seen shields on the ceiling panel, spaced about 1/4" down...

We ordered the mantle from VTS but just tested it last night for fun with the Coleman one. It burned fine, but I can see how it can be extra dangerous without that heat deflector. >D>We will have to get one for sure. And yes, after a minute or two we turned it off, just to be safe.

That a great idea, and we may just have to make one ourselves. We have extra aluminum from our front door that we had remade, so maybe we can fabricate it from that, and I agree, the bigger the better. It burned really clean, but again, I am very cautious with an open flame in a birch trailer loaded with Shellac! Maybe we will do a ceiling panel as well.
I have to admit tho, the soft glow was so beautiful.

This is how we originally thought it was going to be mounted. I am looking back now that it is actually mounted and laughing. I guess I thought the flame went UP?! ha!
