Well, after an extensive search, the only 1/8" birch I could find here in SE PA was $70 a 4X8 sheet, and I need 15 ! Ugh. Out of my price range at this point. So, I decided to try another kind of wood. My brother is a cabinetmaker- and he recommended poplar. $23 a 4X8 sheet (1/8"). Amber shellac alone was too orange- so I experimented with different strengths of his 'Mohawk wood stain" mixed into the shellac (quite fun- added different #s of drops until I got the tint I liked). That is beautiful! Such fun work and you can see the *glow* of the wood!! Love it! That birch wood glow is also something that makes the MCM era of trailers stand out among the rest. Sometimes they are referred to as Birch Wood Beauties... Good job on the match Kaffi. I would have never thought Poplar would work out so well.

kaffi311 did you visit the Reading or Lewistown location? Lewistown would be closer to me at 250 miles each way...but still closer than any other source I’ve been able to find. If I make a trip like that I’d hope to buy enough for 3 campers.

kaffi311 did you visit the Reading or Lewistown location? I had it delivered- my brother has a wood shop here- and gets delivery from the Reading office often. $11 freight charge is all I had to pay But, to tell you the truth, the 1/8" poplar I got is bend board- and it seems more flimsy than the birch in the camper. I am using it for the ceiling panels- but am putting 1/4" birch on the walls. Just so worried that it won't hold up as well if I put the poplar on the walls. Anyways, it is another avenue if you are like me and 1/8" birch is $70 a sheet!

Maybe it's because we have so many trees up here in Canada, but birch is only $29 per sheet here.

There is a lot of birch in Canada but they most likely ship the raw wood to Korea to be made into birch veneer paneling. I could be wrong but that's the way the rest of the world went and put all the lumber manufacturing facilities in America out of business.

At least where I live, most of the wood is advertised as proudly Canadian. Our biggest trade deal with the USA is lumber. Now whether or not it leaves the country and goes to Korea and comes back in, in that process.. I don't know. We don't outsource as much here in Canada, thats why everything is so expensive. I'll check it out next time I am at the lumber store. I am actually just getting some samples of bender wood that are made right here in Canada.
It's funny how that goes... we all like to save money but it has ruined our counties economies in many ways.

We have a healthy lumber market up here in the northern part of the state of Maine. It actually is the livelihood for most of the residents of my town. We have a veneer mill, Columbia Forest Products. They buy the hardwood logs, make the thin veneer sheets, then ship that to their mill in South Carolina where it's laminated to the plywood backer, then gets distributed from there. You can buy the Columbia Forest Products birch as a special order through the Home Depot, but generally you have to go in and explain this to the people at the desk because most of them don't even know. Last time I checked it was $52 or $56/sheet.

We have a healthy hardwood and softwood forestry market here in WV as well, but unfortunately all of our veneer quality logs get shipped down south to be sliced into veneer. Is the stuff from Home Depot true veneer core plywood (with the grain alternating directions from layer to layer) or is it that bending ply that has all of the grain going in the same direction?

I was about to suggest Weber Plywood in Tustin, then I remembered you moved and aren't in California anymore. For anyone in SoCal, check them out. I haven't used their birch, but I picked up some 1/4" maple to finish off our cabinets and one panel of 3/4" walnut for our dinette (that one was very ouch on the wallet) from them and I'm extremely pleased with their quality and their prices are good (not the best around though).
