Our last big project was creating a stone guard for our 1975 Scotty Hilander. I studied many pictures, looked for used ones (no way) and felt really stuck. I was also getting a bit worried since we have our fist trip planned very soon. I found this company, 80/20 Inc, they call themselves an the "Industrial Erector Set" and that is exactly what it is. www.8020.netI chose what they call is the Quick Frame product, it just fits together with a hammer. Simple and I think it turned out really well. I bought Lexan from a local glass company and marine hinges. Frame was $100.00, Lexan about $90.00 and hinges about $40.00. A bunch of images are on my blog, check it out if you are interested. I have never figured out how to place images here, if someone can add a few, that would be great. larryscottyhilander.blogspot.comWe are off to Florida for our first trip - thanks to all for the help and resources. Would you be able to add a photo of the Maine hinges and a link to buy them to the blog? I shared your blog with a bunch of people who are trying to figure out how to build a window gaurs and they want all the info

OH wow I'm really impressed and I love that it's clear so you can see through it and get light through it. I'd make some sleeves for it that fit over and then you have shade when open.

Great idea for the cover, never thought about that, maybe like a large pillow case arrangement, thanks!

That snap together frame reminds me of diy screen frame kits from big box stores. My cheap inner self is wondering if they are wide enough to use, substituting plastic sheeting for the screen...maybe only as a temporary cover that you clip on then remove after arrival.

Love this solution. What thickness Lexan was used? How is it held open when camping? How is it stabilized or immobilized when moving? Will the Lexan stay clear?

Thanks wisconsinjoe, I hope I can answer your questions. I have sold the trailer and am working on another. Concerning the thickness of the Lexan, I think I took the frame pieces to the glass place and we fit it to the groove in the frame. If you go with this product, you must cut the frame to allow the corners to come together. There is nothing on the web site or instructions to tell you to do this and it took me a bit to figure it out. Once I understood that, installation was really easy. The guard was held open by two brackets made for stone guards that are available from Vintage Trailer Supply. They were perfect. I also bought a latch to hold it closed during travel that looked vintage from the same place but when I got it, I was not sure it would hold. So, I went to West Marine and bought a marine hatch device. It is made of black rubber and has a metal receiver. It worked fine but was not vintage in appearance. I was more concerned about making sure that it did not blow away while we were traveling. I don't know how to post pictures but feel free to be in touch with me if you need anything. Larry
