The rule of thumb I learned the hard way...
If the max tow capacity is 5000 than 2500 is closer to the truth. Whatever they say, cut in half.
Want to tow a lot in the Mountains? Something like my Toyota Tundra with a 5.7L v8 tow capacity 10,000 pounds does a really nice job of towing a 2500 pound camper getting 14mpg.

Good tip. It’s not so much the mpg towing but the mpg for using all the other time. With our Jeep and never drive it because of the terrible mpg. So I guess I am looking for the middle ground. Something that will tow it reasonably well, but still get good mpg during normal use. Especially since we have only evening going camping a few times a year.

We had a different set of questions that led us to the 5.7L engine.
I'm retired and drive 100 miles a week now except for towing. This year we drove from NC to Montana, then NC to Maine, and a couple of trips to the mountains here. Total: 14,000 towing and around 3000 local. so why care about the 3000 I'm getting 18mpg local? I was much more concerned with spending $35,000 for the truck than the extra $500 a year in gas.
Also, I like being on the open road in a wide, comfortable truck effortlessly towing without the white knuckle swaying and whine of the engine trying to fight the wind.

Another good tip is if the max tow is less than 3500 lb. Get a different tow vehicle, you will be safer and have a much more relaxed driving experience.
