I just got a 58 shasta airflyte and it looks like they used Ash from what I understand. I can't seem to find 1/8 ash. What are your experiences. It looks like the finish is clear so I can't hide the color with amber shellac. I think I would need about 3 - 1/8 sheets and maybe 3 - 1/4 sheets for the wall. Can I use something else? 20171231_104853 by Tom Ress, on Flickr

BW, don't you think I would want white oak vs red oak?

I would actually prefer red to white for interior purposes. The color is generally the same, so don't get confused by "red" or "white". White is a little denser and will not rot as quickly as red, therefore it is good for outdoor use. Red is easier to work with as it is lighter, and raises less havoc on your saw blades and cutters, thus better for cabinetry and indoor use.

Also...if you can find white oak, it is more expensive than red.

One last thing after reading your above post. I'd go to Youngblood and hand pick the sheets you want to best match your lighter ash. There is lots of color variation in oak, so best if you can see, touch, and feel for yourself.
I've been to Youngblood a number of times for cabinetry materials and it is a neat place to visit. I generally use Renneberg Hardwoods in St. Cloud, but they don't carry oak plywood in 1/8" thickness. Only Baltic birch in 1/8" x 5' x 5' sheets (the real stuff).

mobiltec used oak to replace ash in one build and it looked good to me. Depending on how much repair there is, maybe you can mix and match with birch. I replaced all my walls and ceiling with birch, then used the good bits of ash to rebuild the cabinets and it makes for a nice "furniture" type appearance.

Yep. The best match for ash that I have found is Oak. Let me see if I can find my test photo... OK I can't easily find the side by side test piece I had but here's a photo that shows how well it matches. The bathroom door that I had to make due to the original missing is covered with oak. The rest of the trailer is ash. I sanded down the entire inside and re-covered with amber shellac. Here's how it came out.

Looks good, Larry. I really like amber shellac when there are different woods. It really brings things together.
Oddly, our 57 Corvette had plywood walls, some sort of pine? framing the cabinets. The drawers and closet drawer were mahogany. Yup, different. I did use amber on the interior and it's very difficult to tell the wood differences. If I had it to do over again, I would buy better quality plywood for the walls, something with a cabinet type finish. Not a lot of wall shows but it would make me happy.

Larry does such nice work! Someday I want to grow up to be just like him. And I'll be calling Youngblood Lumber in the morning.

I'm thrilled this question popped up as I was recently wondering the same thing in regards to my '58 Airflyte! Thank you!

Shastatom, I just came across this place today. They make and sell veneer core plywood sheets in 1/8" and appear to sell many different species. They are in Buffalo,MN. I spoke with them today and they had about 30 sheets of 1/8" birch panels for about $32/panel. I bet they might carry Ash. I'm heading there in a few weeks if you want me to report back on the quality... buffaloveneerandplywood.com/

Great find Nate! They are less than 30 minutes from my home and I never knew they existed. Please give us a trip report after you make the visit.
