I find it easier to ask for forgiveness than permission......well sometimes! I vote to keep the overhang, especially if you are going to rebuild it. Just my 2 cents.

Hey Fellas! This is THE Wife! While I admire my husband's tenacity for finding good deals there is a limit to our capacity for flipping trailers. We now have THREE and have not completed one! Maybe this is the life of people that flip trailers - you just keep buying? Did I mention that this was originally my idea, to flip a trailer, and BW thought I was the crazy one. Well I think things have changed.
My 2 cents is that he keeps the overhang too. He cleaned it out today and wait to you see some photos. Who ever mentioned ROT CITY was right!
Hate to admit it but it was a good deal and will be a good project. Not so sure about the Catalina though...

WOW BW, It must be nice to have a wifey that is on board with You. Well, in this case, it could be the other way around. LOL

Well... as the wife mentioned above, I did a cleanout of the inside yesterday afternoon. I believe it was Vikx that stated "rot city" for that really cool and utilitarian overhang. I guess that is why she is the host of this forum and not me! Rot city is probably an understatement as you will see in the ending photos below:
Whoa!! Now that is some Rot City! But the rest of the interior looks great, other than the funky blue carpet. Maybe someone was trying to match the exterior? Oh well, covering up asbestos laden 9" tiles for now, so probably safer to work around during the demo process.
I know you all think I'm crazy, but I do plan to keep that overhang. Just needs some better engineering...probably easier said than done. I'm looking forward to the challenge though...

YEEEOUCH. That is worse than even I had imagined. I still think it is good to keep the overhang though.

What a great find! Yes, there's rot, but I'm hoping that with all the restorations done in the last several years, there's someone out there that has thought this through and come up with a improved sealing method. I will be watching to see how you proceed. I will say that seeing your pictures does make me wonder if my "seems to look good" dome, has the same issues as yours. I did not pull up the mattress when I originally looked at it. Too many critters calling it home for me to climb up there. But I did think that yours looked in similar condition when I saw the original pics. I haven't found someone to move mine yet, but when I do, I'm planning on covering it immediately. I figure it's been setting for at leas 16 years and as soon as it creaks down the road I'll end up with cracks in the butyl. We will not be joining the cutter's club either, I love the look of the dome. Oh and the owner thought originally that mine was a '66, but she couldn't find the title. She got a title for it and they listed it as a '64 based upon a picture she found online (since there are only a couple out there that I've seen). I have seen some Fan's though so you should be able to date it. By the way - LOVIN' those turquoise appliances!! Here's mine if your interested: 2017-09-08_11-47-52 by Corvett crzy, on Flickr 0408171238c by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Anxious now to see if looks are deceiving! Can't wait to see your progress!! Just had this thought though - All sill plate's (I think that's what the experts call them) are usually rotten, since that area on the bunk is really the sill plate for the overhang, maybe it's not so surprising that it's rotted. It does look just like the rotten floor of my Vette!

Hi CorvettCrzy...thanks for the post!
My wife and I are both working on other trailer restos right now, so I probably won't be getting to the FAN anytime soon. I may be the one learning from you on how to go about re-engineering that overhang.
I believe you are correct in that the floor doubles as the "sill". I haven't spent much time trying to figure out how it is supported and able to hold the weight of a couple of sleeping adults. Seems like there should be additional structure in the floor area than what appears. Maybe someone on this forum can share what that looks like and options to reinforce and seal it properly.
Also...I do believe mine is a 1964 based on other photos I've seen, and the imprint of "64" that I uncovered on the tongue (see photos earlier in this thread).
It appears yours has a steel door based on the surface rust that is visible? I'm currently working on a late 50's Catalina and rebuilt my steel door as it was completely rusted out at the bottom. See attached link below if you're interested in the process I used...worked quite well.
