We took a week trip to the Blue Ridge mountains. 600 miles and the camper towed perfectly. A night of heavy rain without a drop leaking in. The acorns dropping at night on the camper (bang, bang, bang) were terrible but when I checked the next morning there wasn't a single ding in the heavy Hemet Valley skin. IMG_0307 A few things I learned. On the next camper I'll install the 12volt reading light closer to my wife. Add a 12 volt charge port closer to the bed to charge the iPad. Use a bigger magnetic latch for the screen door. And when the neighbor says part of the road leading to his favorite campground (Cataloochee) is unpaved… ask questions. IMG_0313 IMG_0316 You start down this tight gravel road with big ruts and potholes thinking it’s maybe 1/4 of a mile. It’s actually closer to 5 miles without a single place to turn around. So once on the road there is no turning back. After a half hour bouncing you come to a wide paved road about 2 miles long. The only way to get to and from the paved road with the campground is the gravel-white-knuckled road. We loved the campground and elk walking all over the place but I’ll never try it again.
A few things about our favorite campground in Montreat. Only site 1, 5, 11 and 14 will accommodate a 15’ camper. Tent sites are located along an beautiful stream. And there is a box the kids were amazed by… apparently you put coins in the box and it works like a phone. The very young children couldn’t believe it. Next week we go on a ten day trip to the vintage rally in GA.

The pay phone part of this story sounded funny but after thinking for a moment I realized that many kids today have never saw a pay phone. This caused the wife and I to try and think where we last saw a pay phone. We couldn't remember but it may have been in an old tavern.

Beautiful country, see what I`m missing from being scared of big city traffic ? I would say that the five miles of rough gravel road was worth the journey. The pay phone and childrens not ever seeing one is funny, at least to Me. LOL

I put a USB charge port near the beds in the 66 Super Shasta. Also put one under the dinette seats.

I put a USB charge port near the beds in the 66 Super Shasta. Also put one under the dinette seats. Good advice. I put one under the dinette about two feet in. I thought the USB charge port and battery light would not be too bright further in. Little did I know checking that meter becomes and obsession. I also placed a charge port in the cabinet under the stove thinking it would offer an out-of-the-way place to recharge. It works to keep the table clear but not to charge the ipad I'm using in bed. Well, I guess that's called "Roughing it". image

I guess I should crop out the 10" memory foam mattress when suggesting I'm roughing it.
I wonder what the original owners would say if they could see the camper today? Better or too complex?
I also wonder how they camped without a 12 volt system at a time when sites with electric were probably unheard of in state parks.

I like the pay phone story. My boys love the one about having to get up and walk all the way across the living room to turn the tv channel. It was rough growing up back then.

Love this. I wonder if the pay phone still works? There's one in the courthouse in a nearby county, but I can't remember if I ever saw someone using it. When my trailer was functional I clipped a 12v port to the battery strung through an interior access panel. Looking forward to an upgrade. And to one day camping again!

nccamper Sounds like my kind of place. If it has a pay phone, that tells me a lot about the remote location. We were originally signed up for the rally at Pine Mountain, but then "stuff" got in the way, and now we don't have a camper complete to take and baby is expected any time. That looks like it's going to be a great rally. If you get pics, please post them, I would love to see what we missed.

Can someone tell me where Pine Mountain is? Georgia near the AL border. It's hot! I posted a few photos on the Gathering of The Times thread. We're heading back to the mountains of NC on Sunday.

Its about 20 miles to little white house, which was FDR's summer home (warm springs) and also where he died... A very cool place if you like history I highly recommend it. nccamper The nearby state park is worth a visit if you have time. Also, the above mentioned is definitely a good 1/2 day trip.
