If you are anything like me you would rather have a root canal that go to the DMV because no matter what paper work you have it's never what they want to see.
Today was no different with the exception of me try to transfer the registration of my 1957 Shasta camper into my name.
I walked in the door and was immediately greeted with the typical long line just to talk to the lady who is there to herd the crowd and hand you more paper work to go along with all you are told to bring.
I will shorten the story of how long it took for them to call out my assigned number, suffice to say I watched the hands of the clock sweep around 60 timed for one full revolution.
Once I get to the assigned window I was surprised to encounter a lady with a smile and apology for it taking so long,I thought to myself this is going to be a smooth transaction as I was handing her the stack of papers.
She said,I have never heard of a 1957 Shasta and I replied they have been around since the 50's and went out of business in the late 70's or early 80's but have started making them again.
She then said,it's strange I have been working here since 79 and I just have never heard of one.
She then ask me how many miles were on it,I replied,I don't have a clue and then she dropped the bomb and ask does it not have a odometer?
I started laughing and said,it's not a car it's a camper and then we both had a good laugh,in fact that might be the first time I left the DMV laughing instead of crying!

Now that is a good story with a happy ending. I had never heard of having to take a number then wait in line, until a friend and I went to Denver as He had bought a pickup over there. I think we sat there for three hours before the number was called. All of that just to get the title notarized. LOL

Well my story is it took over 400.00 and 4 visits to Ca dmv to get our trailer registered and legal including a temporary operating permit to bring it out from New Orleans to Los Angeles. And it already had legal title!! I think the last manager just took pity on me and said I didn't owe any more moolah. At least I got a Vanity Plate. 1st one ever....black and yellow "54 Gypsy".

When I lived in Phoenix Arizona the line was like you said, long and slow bring your lunch & drinks it is going to be a long day. I learned there is a private DMV 1 city block away corner of Dysart & Van Buren it costs $20 extra with NO lines at all. I walked in with my trailer title then walked out 5 minutes later with a new title in my name.

one thing worth paying for in Arizona is the private DMV. I always register at AAA insurance but you have to be a customer. That is California's alternative.

Man, it's a breeze here in Oregon, even doing an out-of-state title transfer with only a partial VIN. Fifteen minutes at the DMV to get the appt. set with the State Police, fifteen minutes at OSP to get a new VIN assigned (even got them to reassign the original VIN), fifteen minutes back at the DMV for plates and tags. It's been twenty years since I've had any experience with an Oregon DMV that wasn't quick and efficient.

You are fortunate to have a DMV that goes that extra mile to accommodate their patrons, if you have anything that hasn't been previously titled you are up the creek without the paddle.
Our Georgia neighbor to the south didn't require titles until 1964 and I purchased a camper that had a license plate & a notarized bill of sale but no title because it predated the law in Georgia and I have been trying to get a title here in SC but to this date I have been unsuccessful.
I have applied for a bonded title but I am not going to spend the money it takes to bring it up to today's restoration standards until I do have the proper paper work. Danny
