A guy I was talking to about campers said to me he had a Shasta compact he started doing a Harley theme make over on had to sell it because he was moving and couldn't take it with him so I went and looked at it and brought it home. he had already taken the skin off and redid the wall studs so the really hard work was already done, Now it needs the electric run and the 12 volt wiring then the paneling done. I already have "my" project still ahead of me on my wilderness but it's a Shasta so I had to scoop it up and was thinking of a friend of mine that always comes to the camp spots we go to if he knows we are heading out and he came by to see it and is going to take it home and finish it out. As we looked it over last night when I got it home it appears the sink drain goes right out the street side wall, is that correct? I see no tank anywhere for fresh or waste water and this is the first old Shasta I have been in and looked that deep into. photo to come if photobucket will stop failing to load my pictures (aarrrgg) woo hoo it finally loaded

This vintage of the Compacts would have had a 16-gal fresh water galvanized tank in the very front of the closet on the streetside. It would supply a hand-pump faucet.
I think it should also have a second "regular" faucet too, which would have been hooked directly through with a shore-water hookup.
(Mine was missing the pump faucet.)
The drain did go out through the streetside. Back in the early 70's it was still thought to be okay to drain your dishwater to the ground. It can easily be hooked into a portable tank, available from several sources, like RV dealers or sometimes, especially this time of year, owners selling on craigslist.
Good on you for grabbing that...you won't regret it!

Thank you number ten!!!!! This one has both faucets as you said, One pump and one for being hooked up in the campgrounds that supply water. I will get pics of the inside and post 'em up soon Yesterday I repaired the door handle that had a spring missing inside so now the door will stay shut and gave it a good washing.

The outlet on mine had this adaptor with it, which takes it down to a garden-hose size and thread. My Airflyte ('64 model) has something similar. Since it is only sink water, it should drain alright.

Cool little Compact!
I often drain the sink straight down and out the bottom. A hose connection allows connection to a tank. This eliminates the trap (no freezing problems) and no drips down the side of the trailer. Many 50s trailers were done this way. I like it, so very simple.

Camping with it in its unfinished state will be a great opportunity to sit in it and see how it functions, and what finishing and remodeling you may want to give it. Sounds like a fun trip!

Yesterday we worked on the old Shasta, The inside was bare studs and insulation foam and we took bed sheets and stapled them up so it can be used for a camping trip soon then we will put actual wood walls in. Since the camper was started in a Harley theme we stayed with that color scheme, We got the propane lines run to the stove and tested it, We built the bed stand, Layed some carpet in it, Hung curtains and did some out side repairs and light wiring for the brake lights. Unfortunately for me I tore something in my left hand yesterday, I felt it pop and heard a tear sound and today I cant pick up a cup of coffee with it and I still have to do wiring for my camper lights on the jeep and pack the bearings in the Shasta but there's no way today with my hand this bad. Even though it was a quickie fix on the Shasta interior it is pretty cool inside.

Well photobucket allowed 1 picture to load, having trouble with that site for sure but I keep trying. We will be doing the interior of this ole girl over the next months and will post in the appropriate areas asking questions and posting pics as photobucket allows but here is a pic of the 68 on a 6 day camp trip.

WOW looks like a perfect day at the camp, the only thing I see missing is a nice toasty fire in the fire ring. I love fall camping.

The above set up works very well, BUT we had very much the same gray water drain setup about 40 or so years ago and it earned me a very big time butt chewing from a park ranger. My young daughter was in the camper taking a nap, my wife and were sitting near by under a shade tree talking with a few other couples when the Ranger walked up and ask whose camper that was that allowing gray water to run out on the ground pointing to my unit. I said mine and he proceeded to explain why that was against the rules and what would happen if he caught me again. We went over saw the mess, looked in the camper to see my daughter pouring all of our drinking water down the drain just to watch it disappear she had already pumped the tank dry. The only good thing was the ranger apologized and offered to help us refill the water at his home located in the park as the park only had hand pumps. The good news is all these years later I still love her no matter what she did growing up.
