I replaced my water heater control valve (the one with the knob to turn on the water heater, off/pilot/on) because the knob on my old one was stuck and needed pliers to turn it. Bought a replacement from vintage trailer supply and used my old pilot tubing etc.
Before replacement, everything worked very well. Burner was great and had a very low pilot light. Now, burner still works great but the pilot light is very large and causes soot on the outside of the camper. The control valve says "pilot not adjustable". Everything is connected and hooked up just like it is was, so not sure where to begin. Orifice maybe not doing what it is supposed to do now... not sure. For now, I just light the pilot, heat the water, then turn off the water heater, which works. But, pilot is definitely not right.
I have a 71 shasta 16SC.
Thanks for any pointers or help.

I would contact VTS to see how they can help. It might be you need a new valve unit. Hard to tell, but you shouldn't have soot from a high pilot...
One other thought: if any of the old orifices gave been "wired" to clean them, it enlarges the orifice too much.

I have a new pilot assembly ordered from them, maybe that will take care of it. I left that portion all original when I replaced the control valve unit. Maybe I knocked something loose when taking apart, who knows. Process of elimination at this point.
Thanks! TJ

For those interested, problem solved. I purchased a new pilot light assembly from Vintage Trailer supply. Word of warning though, they sell one that did not work well with my 70 shasta water heater. I had to fabricate a little, cutting the "stand" and then welding it closer to the tube that goes into the water heater. Drilled a new hole to hold the assembly into place. Works great now, nice little blue flame and when it kicks on, almost a greenish flame with very little yellow.
Pretty easy to install, unless it doesnt fit like the old ones, then add about an hour. Worth it!!
