I received this note today from Photobucket:
photobucket WE NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE BEEN USING PHOTOBUCKET FOR 3RD PARTY HOSTING*
TO RESTORE YOUR 3RD PARTY HOSTED IMAGES, PLEASE UPGRADE TO A PLUS 500 PLAN.
Our Terms of Service does not allow 3rd party hosting with your current account level. UPGRADE NOW *What is 3rd Party Hosting? Photobucket defines 3rd party hosting as the action of embedding an image or photo onto another website. For example, using the <img> tag to embed or display a JPEG image from your Photobucket account on another website such as a forum, Etsy, eBay auction listings, a blog, etc. is definitively 3rd party hosting. Why Photobucket? Photobucket continues to have the distinct pleasure of hosting 15 billion photos from 100 million unique users since inception 14 years ago. The subscriptions we offer are price competitive & we offer unlimited 3rd party hosting, no matter how popular your image is on your forum, blog or online store. Additionally, we offer our users the opportunity to promote their business or products with the rest of the Photobucket community. photobucket | for the love of photos.
I am NOT about to pay Photobucket for an "upgrade" after the way the site has been working for two years... I use an ad blocker and can't get to my photos for several minutes anyway. I'm hoping our old photos are up.
Anyone else??

Well folks, it looks like we've lost most of our photos. Anytime we have inserted a link to Photobucket, there is a nasty little box asking us to upgrade instead.
Some of our tutorials can be re-done, but many of our threads are pretty much defunct.
ANY IDEAS?

You could try a fundraiser to get access again, but this seems like a "Rip the bandage" moment. Hopefully some of the tutorials can be reconstructed from saved images using imgur or flickr. I always thought Photobucket sucked and used my blog, Tapatalk and imgur to host. I would put a big banner at the top of the site to avoid Photobucket and use a competitor. Maybe try to get some tech blogs to write about the ransom aspect...

Thanks Dan. This is horrible but we will survive. I've been happy with Proboards, even with the limited home uploads.
Odd that Photobucket would be gasping. They have seemed so greedy for so long.. I'll do some sleuthing.
It's really a shame that so many cool restorations could be lost. I still think we should NOT give in and PAY.
I can reconstruct the tutorials I wrote, but it will be a winter project. The trailers come first.

Test picture from my photos.google.com. You can upload your pictures and post them. Left click on the enlarged photo, highlight and copy the "Copy Image Address" and that's it. Just a suggestion......

It was really lousy of them to give no advance notice. I understand that they're in business to make money. I understand that they did have fine print, as most services do, saying "Our Terms of Service does not allow 3rd party hosting with your current account level." But trying to bump people to a $399 plan is crazy.
Here is the problem, Flicr and google will do the same eventually.
Is there another service that will transfer photos as an entire account?

Are you sure it isn't a scam? Have you contacted PB?

I hesitate to click on anyone's photos who host from PB because it's SUCH a pain with the popups and delays. UGH

Some of our tutorials can be re-done, but many of our threads are pretty much defunct. ANY IDEAS? I just wrote a thread about this too. Feel free to combine the threads. It's going to be too hard to redo the thousands of photos. There will be a major outcry about this across north america. maybe they will relent and let their prisoners go.I deleted my account because I was so mad. I do need to check your "book sale page" and make sure none of those were hosted there. I am planning now to use google drive. I spoke to a young adult IT guy and he told me that they give you the most free storage and less interference and limitations than other hosting websites.. As well f you do want to pay, for extras you can get 100 gigs of storage that is good for anything (audio/video/ etc) rather than just photos for $2.00 per month. I am planning to go back over a few of the tutorials and diagrams I have posted on here, and I will upload new photos and fix them. I just hope the edit button still works on the threads because I have noticed that after about a month you can no longer edit. Anyway, that will be my long term plan. SaveSave

Are you sure it isn't a scam? Have you contacted PB? I contacted. It's not a scam. But it sure is infuriating!Kind of like when netflix tried to raise the price and lost a lot of followers. Kind of like when coke tried to change the recipe. Remember "new coke".. photo bucket, you messed up big! People will seriously leave in droves... SaveSave
If you haven't received the "notice yet, then I encourage you to get your photos out while you can. SaveSaveSaveSave
