Definitely a "Zipper"! Magazine rack with the "Z" cutout! Tell her I'll give her a hundred bucks right now! (Getting it home may be a bear of a project though...) My understanding of the windows... Rearward side window and bunk window on this is a jalousie: Same positions on this were awning: Shasta switched over somewhere in the production of the 1969 or '70 model year.

I like surge brakes. The old ones you used to have to get out and pin them before you could back up in anyplace that offered much resistance and you can't tap them to help stop a sway. But the new ones can backup over most things without locking them out and as said above they don't require a controller. Atwood still offers a complete line of surge hitches. I also don't recommend them in the mountains, a few years ago my wife and I was in N.Carolina and going down an eleven mile down grade with around 100 sharp curves so I put the transmission in low and was letting the engine hold us back as we were near the bottom my wife said do we still have brakes I smell them getting hot, I laughed and told her that I hadn't touched the car brakes but once or twice and that it was the brakes on the car trailer she was smelling.

I've rebuilt 3 in the last few years. Not difficult; new master cylinder and clean lines. We've had very good luck with them. Great for people who don't want a brake controller or want to tow with more than one vehicle. Oh that's good to hear because I have one that I am going to sell this week that has the same system.

My father in law has lots of old travel trailer tricks. I was discussing a trailer we looked at buying that had surge brakes. He said if it doesn't have a way to pin them just carry a mini sledge and a block of 2x4. Beat the 2x4 between the tongue and hitch on the car to prevent it from moving forward and actuating the brakes. Gotta love Old Timer Ingenuity!

I don't know how the mechanism I have works so I will take a photo and see if Vik or Bill can tell me.

All of them I have ever encountered the coupler is attached to a lever mechanism that pivots on a shaft causing the opposite end of the lever to activate the master cylinder, also there is a secondary lever that hooks to the tow vehicle by a chain or cable that serves as a breakaway control. It usually has a ratchet lock that has to be released to release the brakes once the breakaway cable is pulled. If everything is free to move and properly lubed they work great. The instant the tow vehicle starts to stop the trailer weight/momentum causes the surge coupler to actuate. The force needed to actuate is enough keep it from moving when you just let off the throttle in high gear but loose enough to move when you touch the brakes. Google Atwood surge brake couplers and you should find more information. Many of them used the old Ford fruit jar master cylinders, which should be available through your local NAPA store, if not in stock they should be able to order the parts. This system is very common on rental trailers because they don't require a controller.

The last surge coupler I bought new was an Atwood that I purchased from a boat supply store cost me around $150.00 including a new master cylinder (2009 I think). Most surge systems use 3/16 steel double flared brake lines available from about any automotive parts house in different lengths that can be joined together with couplers to get the proper length. The brakes at the wheel are just drum brakes similar to any automotive unit. If the rubber hose at the axle needs replaced take it off and a good atomotive supply should be able to match it up. Hope this helps.

Well Bill it will sure help the person who buys this thing I have. I have to get It off my lot. It's a project/burningman/hunting trailer that I'm just getting rid of. I already replaced the skin on one side. That's the one you saw in my metal routing video. It has no kitchen. Has a goucho bed and a closet/porta potty room. Perfect little beater for someone. I re-sealed it so it is in an "Arrested State Of Decay"... That's what I call a trailer like this anyhow.
Thanks for the info...

I am trying to reach Portajohn. I have two Zippers and have a question for him. It doesn't look like he's been on the site for a while, so if anyone knows how to reach him, I would sure appreciate the information. Kind wishes, Melissa Guaranteed that is a Zipper.. I have a brochure showing those wings..

Finally got his project "zipped up" and probably traded it for a wooden boat.. some of us thrive on projects that keep us humble.

I think he's still on that other forum. Restoring Yesterday's Trailers or something like that. I never could use that forum and no one ever was able to tell me HOW to use that forum. Just as well because I only have time for one forum anyhow.

Tap a Talk has taken over RYT and it a nightmare. Lots of people joining; very little discussion. John Palmer was posting a lot for a while but not much anymore. Owner Rob is very busy with work, so not able to contribute as often.
