I'm going to use a mini fridge so I really don't need this huge vent on the outter siding. Should I try to seal the hole and leave the original louvred cover on the outside?

I just installed a very quiet mini fridge that puts out almost no heat so I left the new skin uncut and eliminated the previous owner's vent. I vented the cabinet inside so there can be air movement if needed...but I don't think it is needed.

Maybe a piece of metal behind the vent with butyl tape and screws?

"A piece of metal behind the vent with butyl tape and screws?" It should be fine with the vent over it. I'd seal it then spray the area with a hose and check for leaks. The vent itself is added protection.

Do you still have the vent and do you think it will work on a 1972 1400?

aslmx, Is there a chance you could post a picture of what you have? It would really be helpful. You may have exactly what I need.

The fridge vent on a '72 1400 should look like the one on this 16SC, top door on the front end:

I'm sorry that I'm just now finally replying to your earlier post. No, what I'm talking about is the cover that is mounted on the roof.

Just cover it with a piece of metal, a lot of screws and some putty tape or OSI gutter seal.

I covered the one in BB's roof just as Mobil described. Raised and re-framed under the roof hole so the screws would have plenty of bite and cut a piece of metal to fit. NOTE: I tried metal of the same pattern and it didn't fit the slight lift from the shims (1/2") Metal with a pattern 90* off fit MUCH better. Anytime a roof is patched or a protrusion is added, shims will allow water to run away from the patch. I used pure butyl putty and screwed the patch down. I then painted two coats of Proflex paint on sealant (not the caulk) over the top, screw heads and edges. After paint, any tiny gaps are easily visible. Dab a small amount of OSI gutter seal over them and smooth with a paint thinner dipped finger. You want it as smooth as possible. Touch up the paint. Reseal if you see any gaps. 63bbtrailer.shutterfly.com/pictures/207#204 Scroll back and forth to see more photos.
